If this team had a $10M elite player instead of a $12M 4th line, the forward lines would actually look good enough for a playoff spot. Moot point though since the D and goalies aren't there yet. So we're probably looking at 2 more seasons of suck...

If Erne continues to play well, I can see Abby getting bought out after next season when Helm's contract expires.

Abdelkader would have to really suck for the RW to buy out an alternate captain.
I believe he's here for life.
Yzerman could try to find a taker for Nielsen/Helm.

I think it was more likely due to losing a forward than Svech's knee.
But Zadina 16:42
Hirose 15:29
Erne 14:47.
You believe Svech got less time because Nielsen went out? That makes no sense.

Why are you posting their ice times?

You said you think Blash thinks low of Svech and the guy said possibly he is rehabbing his knee - but that's out of the realm of possibilities? I don't understand what you're trying to do here. It seems you want to trash Blashill for playing him so little despite playing solid - but don't want to acknowledge the possibility that him coming off reconstructive knee surgery limited his time.

Sadly Helm/Abbie are top line players depending which side of the bed Blashill wakes up on.
I'm inclined to believe that Holland pressure him to give those guys ice time. If anything, I expect Nemeth, Erne, and Flip to get more ice time than they deserve. Stevie is not committed to Holland's mistakes.

Didn't Blash scratch Hughes for Glendening in the WC?

Blash loves his veteran grinders, most coaches do.

My guess Filp gets around 15-16 a night this season.
Nemeth is 3rd best D on this team behind Hronek/Green. So easily 20+ a night.
Doubt Erne would sniff more than 12 minutes a night. Perhaps if he was 5-10 years older Blash would give him more.

So the 8th and 10th forwards in ice time last year were playing top line???

Both also saw their ice time reduced greatly in the second half. I mean I get that you don't like them or the coach, but there is no evidence of this claim sorry. In fact after his first season where he was actually decent Abdelkader's minutes have declined under Blashill. He was near 18 minutes under Babcock at 18 minutes under Blashill's first year and now is down to just over 15 minutes and that is in part because of his special teams involvement anyway in particular on the pk pushing minutes for both guys. Both Helm and Abdelkader have seen a decline in 5 on 5 time. Helm fell below 15 minutes for the first time in years last year. Which was deserved, but it is happening, I expect it to continue this year as neither guy looks a whole lot better thus far.

When players get injured and come out of the lineup, early in a game, the lines get jumbled. And usually, one line suffers.
In this case, it was the line with Helm-Svech.

This is not hard to figure out.

There is more to what line you are on than ice-time. Take Jordan Staal for example. He would routinely play 18-20 minutes but was the 3rd line forward on Pittsburgh.

Last season, the top line was ANYBODY playing with Larkin. He was by far the best and most consistent player.

While I don't recall Abbie playing long with Larkin last season he has. Also Helm was playing on Larkin's line for a stretch until he got hurt.

Helm's most common line combo for last season was Helm-Larkin-Mantha.
The frequency of Helm playing along side Larkin was about 30%.

Granted I watched only 15-20 games last season, I recall watching plenty of Helm-Larkin.

For example this game vs Florida.

This is just from the highlights, but there are plenty of more games like this.

Helm-Larkin on Yandle goal
Abdelkader-Larkin on disallowed Detroit goal
Larkin-Helm-Nyquist on ice when Larkin takes out Huberdeu
Larkin-Helm-Nyquist on Larkin's goal to make it 3-2
Larkin-Helm-Nyquist on again when Nyquist misses empty net at 9:26 of 3rd[/QUOTE]

Helm played for a segment because he is one of our F1 checkers. His ice time was drastically reduced once Bertuzzi proved effective in that role. He had his lowest ice time in years. This is also a reason why Erne was dealt for in terms of getting another F1 forechecker on the team. One of the reason Glendening played with Athanasiou and Hirose down the stretch is this concept. I am not sure who will really do it on line 2, hopefully they can figure it out ala Filppula-Zetterberg-Hudler where nobody really fit that role. Should be interesting to see how that comes together.

I mean Helm was 10th in ice time really. I realize there was a segment of the season, but they are clearly interested in moving them down the lineup and that was pretty apparent last year when guys were ready they were continuously bumped down the lineup. Which they should be, I just don't really understand what you want Blashil to do, he reduced their ice time but somehow they are his first line forwards for him to you. Also some of younger guys need to recognize the roles coaches and not just Blashill but all coaches when you look around the league want. An easy way to make a team is doing that, it is a part of why Ehn stayed at the end of camp last year. You play a consistent responsible game and are heavy on the forecheck you get a lot of trust. I hope Erne gets the first crack because of injuries or if the second line isn't working, we will have to wait and see. But absent improvement or returning to being better in the physical game where both Abdelkader and Helm have declined, their minutes will continue to be cut in my opinion.
