Is this the "worst" year for rookies in a while?

since when is this league on par with the NHL?
It's not. It's still an adult league and if we are nitpicking, he played as an 18/19 yr old against men. Look at the players who were alongside him. Youre faulting a player that didnt play in the NHL post-draft season when they were doing really well regardless.

Edit: the top 10 of that group that were NHLers are Sedins, Naslund, Forsberg, Backstrom, Sandstrom, Kent Nilsson...thats elite company. After Nilsson, he has the highest p%. You cant tell me what he did there wasnt impressive. This guys hype didnt just come out of f***ing no where.

We can compare this to actual post-draft seasons too if youre going to pull the small sample size bs. **Most of these guys were in their second season of the SHL, Kent Nilsson's post draft season wasnt actually his u20 season*

His rookie season was dominant when compared to prior years. Go ahead and see for yourself.

I think Dahlin will be up in the top 5, Petterson probably 10-15. But this class also lacks depth.
Skinner had arguably a better rookie season just a couple years before MacKinnon. Nugent-Hopkins had a better P/GP. MacKinnon's rookie season really doesn't stand out very much. Nylander had almost the same statline 2 years ago and he was 6th in Calder voting.

He was barely even better than Palat in his own rookie year.

The top end of this rookie class is great, as good as other years IMO, maybe not so much depth after that but there is a lot of the season to be played.

between 2007-2008 there was only one 70 point rookie (Kane - 72 points)
Mackinnon's rookie season was the best in 3 years, and behind only Kane and Backstrom since 2007.

Only 4 rookies (Kane, Backstrom, Mackinnon, and Skinner) broke 60 points between 2007-08 and 2013-14 (6 full seasons and 1 half season)
From 2014-15 to 2017-19, 11 rookies have broken 60 points (in only 4 seasons). And that excludes McDavid!

MacKinnon's rookie season really doesn't stand out very much. Nylander had almost the same statline 2 years ago and he was 6th in Calder voting.

That's exactly my point - the rookie classes from 2014-2018 were incredible relative to what we had experience for the prior 7 years.

Lol. 24 games is a small sample size so,why call off an entire rookie class for it, smartass. Your thread is literally due to a 24 game sample size or a quarter of a season sample size. Heck tkachuk who also suffered an injury earlier, has even a smaller sample size then 24.

Its a small sample size statistically, but not for actually watching players play.

McDavid+Eichel & Matthews+Laine. These 4 were considered Elite Franchise changing players with McDavid dubbed as generational. There wasn’t a concensus number 1 with Nico vs Nolan and not much separation from 1 to 6. Last draft Dahlin was considered the consensus number 1, but no one was stating he’s generational. It also takes defenceman longer to develop and Dahlin and Heiskanen have looked great as teenagers. Pettersson came in guns blazing and has been excellent. Tkachuck looks good. IMO this years class is better than last years, but the other drafts had some highend elite talent that seldomly comes around.

Dahlin and Heiskanen have looked like 10 year veterans, while Pettersson does something almost every shift. Tkachuk has been excellent, as well.

They’ve all been playing great. Maybe not to the level of McDavid but you can’t really compare your average Calder candidate to guys like McDavid/Crosby/OV.

I think this years top few rookies are close to what we've seen recently, but I think the depth really falls off after that.

Comtois looked great. Very weird situation where he played 10 games, got hurt, then sent down to Q. Speculation is if he played one more game, he wouldn't be exempt from the expansion draft.

Also, 25 games does not a year make.

I guess we just have very different ideas of what constitutes dominance then. Scoring 4 more points than the next best rookie doesn't qualify as dominance to me.

Dahlin is incredible, and Chabot is good as well.

No one else really stands out.

So you think Petterson has any real chance at finishing 2nd in the NHL in goals? I would bet you he doesn't finish in the top 10.
Pettersson won’t score 25 goals. He was way overhyped by Nucks fans.

I think this years rookie crop looks real good. And the top is really good as well.

Just because we had Matthews and McDavid the previous years doesnt mean this is a bad year.

Trolls are only effective when they are subtle.

The current vintage of rookies is no worse than usual. It's certainly unlike the Patria Stefan draft year.

Sounds like you have no idea what you’re talking about. Heiskanen is playing like a number one defenseman, Pettersson is PPG on a tire fire team and Chabot isn’t even a rookie.

But, yeah, thanks for coming out.
I did forget Heiskanen, he has been great. Pettersson does not impress at all!
