But putting up multiple pathetic seasons of less then 15 goals outweighs that big time. He's a solid player but not hof material not even close

You must think Cheechoo was better than Joe Thornton in 05-06. And that Adam Oates and Henrik Sedin are just solid players.

His lack of goals is nothing to do with his goal scoring ability. It’s that he’s always been a pass first player who happens to be one of the best playmakers in the game since coming into the league.

I see you have watched him a ton. I hope the voters aren't as ignorant as you.

I think he is. Wonderful playmaker, one of the best players to come out of one of the best drafts ever, 2003. Not a 1st ballot Hall of Famer but I think he'll get in.

I'm far from a fan of Getlaf but yeah he gets in.

If he stays healthy and plays for 4 more seasons he should finish with over 700 assists, 1ooo points and maybe 300 goals.

Is Eric Staal a HOFer?

1118 GP
408 G
941 P
1 Stanley Cup
1 Olympic Gold
1 WC Gold
1 WC Silver
1x 2nd team All-Star
0 individual awards (1x top 5 in voting for an individual award (Hart))

Resume looks pretty damn similar to Getzlaf's, but I don't think I've ever seen a single person suggest Staal should be inducted into the HHOF.

When just looking at career totals it might be close but Getzlaf has a pretty clear edge when drilling down a bit more.

Hart voting
Staal 4, 17, 22, 23
Getzlaf 2, 6, 7, 15, 20, 20

Post season all star voting:
Staal 2, 7, 8, 8, 9, 9
Getzlaf 2, 3, 6, 7, 7, 8, 10

Selke finishes:
Staal 16, 31, 39, 40 plus a few finishes outside the top 40
Getzlaf 10, 13, 13, 18, 20, 22 plus two outside the too 40

Top 10 goal finishes:
Staal 4, 5, 8
Getzlaf none

Too 10 point finishes:
Staal 6, 7
Getzlaf 2, 6, 10

Top 10 assist finishes
Staal 6
Getzlaf 3, 3, 4, 5, 7, 7, 8

The only thing Staal is better at is goal scoring. Other than that Getzlaf is the far superior player.

Yeah he gets in and he's a good bit better than staal who stalled mid career, though revitalized himself with Minnesota it's too late. Getzlaf was consistently elite.

Voting finishes outside of the top 5-6 are such a crapshoot that they're not really worth considering IMO. By the time you're in that range of the voting, you're talking about a couple of voters ranking the guy 4th or 5th for the award.

In any case, I think Staal is in interesting comp because their resumes are remarkably similar, yet I see several people calling Getz a 1st-balloter while I don't think I've ever seen anyone suggest that Staal belongs there at all.

Not a shoo-in, but I'd lean more on him getting in - not that I personally think he should get in, but I think the voters will think so. Despite the lack of individual awards, he's had an all-around great career.

Take out the voting after 6 then and Getzlaf still has a significant advantage in Hart and AS voting. If anything that hurts Staals case. Getzlaf at his best was a better player than Staal.

Yes he will get in. His PPG is totally elite, Hart calibre peak, great international career, not only a cupwinner but a huge contribution in that win and 120 points in the playoffs.

Only 33 years old and got a few seasons left in the tank.

Getzlaf has a couple down years while Staal had 4 in a row, and that’s what sticks in people’s minds now because playing in Minnesota isn’t much better than playing in Anaheim as far as national exposure goes. Only revitalizing his career after he was traded and no longer captain doesn’t help his image either.

I think there's a fair chance he'll get in. Great player.

I don't think he's a shoo-in though. Biggest issue is lack of individual hardware.

Since 05-06, Getzlaf's rookie season in which he split time between the AHL and NHL, he ranks 7th in points:

1. Ovechkin - 1154
2. Crosby - 1145
3. Thornton - 1015
4. Malkin - 960
5. H. Sedin - 924
6. Staal - 910
7. Getzlaf - 897

Starting from his first full season in 06-07, he ranks t-5th:

1. Ovechkin - 1048
2. Crosby - 1043
3. Malkin - 960
4. Thornton - 890
5. Getzlaf/Kane - 858

He's clearly not in the same tier as the generational peers like Ovechkin, Crosby, or Malkin, but to suggest that he's Marleau status is a bit much. Factor in the the Cup win and international success, I think he's quite likely to make it in. Anecdotally, I also think that players that spend their entire careers with a single team also tend to be viewed favourably, so that will probably benefit him.

Definitely not "easily", i'd say 50/50

It's interesting to consider how this might play out. The HHOF admits 3-4 NHLers each year.

Below is my totally imprecise analysis of "marquee" names +/- 5 years of Getzlaf's draft year.
Setting aside older guys who are shoo-ins and will be inducted before Getzlaf retires (e.g Jagr, Iginla), there are some older less obvious names that could be admitted in years once Getzlaf is eligible (Theo Fleury, Elias, Roenick, etc.). But even accounting for that, we could see 30-35 of the names below make it in over the years. While Getzlaf obviously isn't a Crosby-/Ovechkin-level shoo-in, I think it's fair to say he's better than a few of those names there. On balance, I'd say his odds are better than 50/50. But we'll see!

1998
- Vincent Lecavalier
- Brad Richards
- Pavel Datsyuk

1999
- Henrik Sedin
- Daniel Sedin
- Henrik Zetterberg
- Ryan Miller

2000
- Marian Gaborik
- Henrik Lundqvist

2001
- Jason Spezza
- Ilya Kovalchuk

2002
- Rick Nash
- Duncan Keith

2003 draft
- Eric Staal
- Ryan Getzlaf
- Corey Perry
- Patrice Bergeron
- Marc-Andre Fleury
- Shea Weber

2004 draft
- Alex Ovechkin
- Evgeni Malkin
- Pekka Rinne

2005
- Sidney Crosby
- Anze Kopitar
- Jonathan Quick
- Carey Price

2006
- Nicklas Backstrom
- Phil Kessel
- Jonathan Toews
- Claude Giroux

2007
- Patrick Kane
- Jamie Benn
- PK Subban

2008
- Steven Stamkos
- Drew Doughty
- Erik Karlsson

I wouldn't induct Getzlaf if his career ended today. If he has some more solid seasons and builds his career numbers I probably would. He is nearing point per game right this season now but has missed time to injury.

Some people here have low standards for the Hall of Fame apparently.

Knowing 3-4 NHLers get into the HHOF each year, who gets in ahead of him? I mean, there are a bunch of obvious names, but once you run through them, you realize there are many of those HHOF admission slots left to be filled by players in a tier that could include a guy like Getzlaf.

Bergeron is the only one I can see being a sure-fire first ballot one assuming he continues to perform the two-way play he's known for. And even then, I'm not sure he gets in on the first ballot.

But I can't look at that 2003 list and see anyone else who is deserving. Not even Staal. If we're including Staal and Getzlaf, do you think Marleau should get in as well? He doesn't have a Cup, but that should not be the accomplishment that tips the scales in the player's favour. He just performed well over the years, and deserves recognition, but does he deserve a spot in the Hall of Fame?
