Don’t say eye test when you mean points
This was mentioned last night during the Sharks game against the Golden Knights by Sharks PBP guy Randy Hahn, who added that Gerard Gallant has the Jack Adams all but locked up. I know that the Sharks PBP guy is going to be biased, but it got me wondering - is Peter DeBoer a potential Jack Adams candidate?
At the start of the season, the Sharks were written off by most as a non-playoff team or a bubble team at best. A team that had historically relied on fantastic regular season performances from Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton had just lost the speedier half of the duo in the offseason and did nothing to replace him.
Game 47, Joe Thornton leaves with an injury, Sharks lose in OT after being down 3-0 to Winnipeg. At this time, among all NHL teams, they rank 7th in P%, 6th in GA/GP, 5th in PP%, and 4th in PK%. The Sharks had already exceeded expectations up to that point; they had held a divisional playoff spot for much of the season. However, after losing their #1C, they were seen as a prime candidate for a regression, still sitting only 5 points ahead of Western Conference teams out of the playoff race in a very tight race.
In the 27 games since, the Sharks have maintained their position as 7th in P%. With their win against Vegas, they are now closer to 1st in the Division than they are to being out of a playoff spot. (Although St. Louis will likely change that tonight with their near inevitable win against Vancouver that will tie them with the Sharks for games played and place them only 6 points behind San Jose.) Barring an epic and hilarious collapse, the Sharks will be making yet another trip to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
At this point in the season, the Sharks rank:
7th in P% and points
12th in GF/GP
8th in GA/GP
8th in goal differential
11th in PP%
2nd in PK%
8th in Wins
10th in ROW
6th in regulation losses (in decreasing order)
9th in SF/GP
6th in SA/GP
12th in 5v5 CF%
5th in 5v5 CF% Close
7th in 5v5 FF%
3rd in 5v5 FF% Close
10th in 5v5 xGF%
9th in 5v5 adjusted xGF%
This despite many injuries to key players who missed some time and played some games clearly hampered by injuries, as well as the season crushing blow to their HOF #1C, the longest tenured Shark on the roster.
In your opinion, given this information, should Peter DeBoer be considered a candidate for the Jack Adams award?
