At first glance it looks pretty impressive but what do things look like if we don't count the power play?

To make a long story short of the top 50 scorers in the league Nylander is 3rd in power play scoring per minute but 42nd in even strength scoring per minute.

If we divide the pp rate by the even strength rate Nylander is the 3rd best power play specialist in the league which isn't really a good thing.

He just played his first full season in the NHL and he ranked 42nd in the entire league for even strength points per minute? That's a first line player. Scary thing is, he will only get better.

He has the best vision on the team. Best playmaker easily and he may give a run to Matthews this for best player on the team. Mitch is below Nylander as an all situations player. The JVR Bozak Marner line was sheltered.

Yes he's a powerplay specialist. He's also one of the best (if not the best) at generating chances 5v5. Other players like that? Giroux, Backstrom, Seguin, etc.

The sample is too small. Different linemates and more minutes will yield a different split next year and the year after.. Points are points so it isn't really a bad thing unless he doesn't create es chances which isn't really the case.

Of course as a non center and p specialist he should be much cheaper to resign.:sarcasm:

I thought his underlying numbers indicate he is capable of producing more 5 on 5 numbers than he did. Watching the games he sure can control the play at even strength and generate chances. I don't really consider him a PP specialist.

So the chart showed Willie had more PP points than Crosby despite Crosby had played more than 100PP mind. That's pretty good

No.

Once his 5v5 sh% began to normalize later in the season his even strength scoring junoednup.

Expect his scoring to be more balanced in the 5v5 vs PP next season.

With that said, most top scorers in the league in general tend to put up tons of PP points, the extra space allows their skill to shine through. Never understood why so many seem to use PP production as some sort of negative/backhanded compliment. A power play goal counts the same as one scored at even strength....

When you're around players like Kucherov, Hedman, and Backstrom you know you suck.

Willie's team ES oiSH% was 6.9% -- down from 7.4%, when he was playing with AHL plugs, and had a ES PDO of 99.1. Given his 70th percentile shot generation (as a 20 year-old!), plus his PDO likely reverting to above 100, his ES production will be just fine.

He's just a great offensive threat.

During the second half of the season(January 1st onward) he had some of the most even strength points on the team, and all of his points in the playoffs were at even strength.

Imo nylander's experience on larger ice surfaces combined with his ridiculous skill level makes him a pp dynamo! You could see it at the whc on the larger ice surface, all that time and space allowed him to shine. Now he just needs to up his 5v5 totals, which I'm sure will happen

He's almost 50 minutes below everyone that list, I'd be interested to see if his numbers tail off given 50 more minutes or if it remains near the same.

Of course it's only one year so the sample size isn't big enough to conclude he's any kind of specialist. It is nice to see him up there with Backstrom :)

Can I turn this into a Kessel thread? :sarcasm:

Just 4 less points in 100 less minutes. He easily replaces Kessel.

As to the question, not basing this on anything but my old eye test, but yes I think he will be our power play specialist in that I think his game changing abilities benefit with more room. Not selling his Even strength play short, but his shot is deadly from anywhere and his play making, skating explode with the extra room.

Give him more ice time on the PP. but who do you take it away from?
