I noticed that while doing a google search for various spellings of his first name, I came up with a lot of results for "yevgeny" and "malkin" in Israel-related pages? Not like it's a big deal or anything, but it'd be an interesting factoid to know.

There are about 5 threads talking about Jewish hockey players. Just search for one and you'll find a list. I'm not sure about Malkin though.

I'm quite sure there have been threads about this topic.

Also, couldn't the reason there are a few israeli Evgeni Malkins out there be because there are alot of former Russian/Ukrainian jews in Israel?

Yes.

If I were Jewish, I'd certainly like to know.

Hehe... agreed.

I don't think Malkin is Jewish. From what I understand, 'Malkin' is a Russian name, not a Jewish Russian name. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Does it really matter?
Yes and no.

He would be the same person and player. However, for alot of us jews it's something to take pride in. "5,000 years of traditions from Moses to Sandy Kofax. Hell yeah I'm living in the past."

It is quite possible that malkin is a Jewish name. Most of the people I have met with *kin as a last name have been Jews from the Ukraine. My guess would be yes. Same would apply to Ovechkin. There are a large number of Russians and Ukrainians moving back and forth across the borders as early as the start of the 16th century. Even if Malkin is a russian, my guess would be that his father's family is originally from the Ukraine.....your human geography lesson for the day!

If this isn't important then I guess nationality isn't either, right?

Just as nationality of a player is about pride of that country, a players ethnicity is for that ethnic group. Ex. Jarome Iginla for those of African descent.

It's nice to have a Jewish role model in athletics. We have the stereotype of being nebishy, weak and flocking towards professions, so having a jew perform at a physical peak is a nice thing to see.

There are a couple of jokes about the subject in popular culture:
In Airplane!
"Do you have any light reading?"
"I have this leaflet on jewish sports legends."
On South Park the boys we're playing hockey and Cartman stopped a shot by Kyle and made a crack about jews not being able to play hockey. Just nice to refute those stereotypes.

There is an article in the past issue of Heeb magazine about this subject (the one with Jesus on the cover, don't let the title scare you.) It talks about the websites and periodicals dedicated towards tracking jewish athletes and our various Halls of Fame.

It's nuts how people try to get all offended and self-righteous on a thread that was just asking a simple, harmless question. You don't have to prove to us that you're not racist or xenophobic by coming out and saying "what does it matter?!" when it's obviously just a simple question and not an accusation of any kind. There are people here that are jewish and out of simple curiosity would like to know if Malkin is jewish. Not every question of the belief of a player is based in hatred, so let's not jump the gun here. If somebody says something insensitive or dumb, that's the time to come out with your "who cares! boo!" remarks and all that, i'm curious as to this myself because I think it would be a great story.

People these days. ;)

FYI: Malkin could very well be a jewish last name... malka in hebrew is queen. Most hebrew/jewish names are associated with actual words. Like my name Oren is a pine tree in hebrew or my moms name is shoshana which is rose. get it? :lol

The reason for this is probably because there are over 1.5million Russian people living in Israel which has a total population of 6 million. The reason for this is because the Soviet Union was forced to allow Russians to leave and I think one of the few countries on the list was Israel.

I dont think the "Who cares" comments showed any hatred or accusations of any sort. People have a right to voice thier opinions and say that it doesn't matter.

I dont see the big deal in either asking if he is Jewish or in proclaiming that it doesnt matter.

I think you are over reacting as well.

Well, perhaps i've jumped the gun too. If anybody was offended I apologize. I just see these pre-emptive strikes by a lot of people on here trying to be a hero for a certain group of people and it's just a little disconcerting at times. People try to carry the flag for people that aren't offended. This thread was quite obviously intended in a way that wouldn't be considered offensive and people still went out of their way to show how politically correct they were. Just a little tick of mine I suppose.

It's like a poster saying "I think Wayne Gretzky's wife is pretty, does anybody else think so?" and then three people going "WHO CARES! IT'S INNER BEAUTY THAT COUNTS!!!" when it quite obviously wasn't intended to demean anyone. It's just a knee jerk reaction for some people to post simply to let the reaction seen by others.

*steps slowly away from thread*

I think that Malkin is a perfectly Russian last name. I wouldn't "suspect" anything, at least.. :).

And, yes, Israel has a lot of ethnic-Russians/Ukrainians. The reason is that a lot of those people have partial-Jewish blood, probably much too insignificant for them to be "real" Jews, but still enough to relocate to Israel using the "I'm a Jew returning to my original homeland" card. A lot of families half-and-half moved that way... There are the Russian orthodox churches in Israel and everything - kinda defies the point of an "all-Jewish" state, as has been constantly emphasized by a lot of Israeli immigration officials. But that country isn't that alluring lately anyway because of intensified conflicts with the neighbors...

"in" endings are the Russian ones, not Ukranian. From his surname it is hard to find out (at least for me) that he has an Ukranian or Jewish origin.

Few years ago was watching a tv program "NHL week" (or something, don't remember the name for sure). There was a tv report from Israel there, about the trip of some American junior hockey team to Israel. They played few games with Israel kids. One of the American players said something like "we thought we come here and teach them some hockey things but eventually we learned a lot from them". The roster of Israel team was full of kids from ex-USSR.
PS: Population of Israel is about 6 million people and about 1 million of them are immigrants from ex-USSR.
