he's only 31 and stranger things have happened, but as of now he's a classic HHOVG

only 2x Top 5 Norris and a pair of AS-2

Nope, nor is he on pace to be.

Going to be tough for him to be productive in his last years...health issues and only average hockey sense...last year was an absolute abortion for him. Hopefully he can rebound...but even if he does, he's not going to the HOF...

I hope not. Not one Norris, not one AS, not selected for the Olympics? He was in the talks for a Conn Smythe once, but I wasn't sure how serious those talks were. No, and he shouldn't be either. Who do you think he is, Phil Housley?

Had he played for the 2017 run, had a better SCF in 2016 (would've been the logical Smythe winner) and not injured himself in 2013, thus losing the Norris he should've won, he would've been really, really hard to keep out.

With enough team success - maybe

he's not a passenger - he's a core player, #1D, on multiple cup winning teams. Enough team success in that regard counts i think

He'll be inducted the same day he retires.

Nah, but I'd probably put him in the Gonchar/Zubov mould.

To be honest, every player picked ahead of him (the right D's) are going to the HHOF, too.
... I mean, it's probably worth something that he wasn't considered better than similar-aged, not-in-Vancouver PK Subban for the 7th D-Man job, I just wouldn't be putting a ton of stock into this.

If Shea Weber and Ryan Suter aren't Hall of Famers, neither is Kris Letang.

I remember Letang being really good in the ‘16 SCF. Lead the team in points and scored the eventual cup winning goal.

    Memory could be bad though.

To the OP, he’s definitely not a HHOF player. If he’d not had as much problems with injuries..maybe. But ifs shouldn’t put players in HHOF.

I meant, the finals. Not the playoffs.
To me, he was the best Penguin until the Finals.

Dear Lord, no. Great player when healthy (which is sporadic) and goes through stretches where he plays like an imbecile.

    And I'm a Pens fan.

I was more specifically referring to Drew Doughty and Shea Weber (due to handedness), but I did forget about Pietrangelo though.

After the last season even Penguins fans wouldn't want him anywhere near the HOF.

No reminds me more of a modern day Ian Turnbull. Some really good offensive stats, and was part of some really good teams (something Turnbull was not). Still, nowhere near enough accomplishments.

I’ve always thought of Legang as the Desjardins of this era. Fair?

I think if he stayed healthy he had a shot. Chances are he would have been close to winning a Norris. Yes he has defensive deficiencies but he also has been close to elite offensively at times. Has impressive playoff numbers as well, roughly the same as Keith.

Sortof. They're completely different as players though.

Desjardins came in as a very mature D at a very young age. Pietrangelo might be a better comparable for Desjardins.

if he was a four-time postseason All-Star and not just a four-time All-Star Game participant, then maybe we would be talking about a potential Hall of Famer here. I think Letang is better than people are giving him credit for in the present day, but as far as all-time players go, it seems like people in this thread are very clear on where he fits. No way he gets in the Hall.

(I don't think Kris Letang, Shea Weber, or Duncan Keith just stopped being top 25 NHL defensemen last season... I'm looking at you, THN preseason positional rankings)

Having Weber out was a complete reactionnary move in order to look cool amongst the younger crowd. It sounds VERY stupid when put like this... and that's because it is stupid.
I mean, the guy played exactly 1 period with 2 non-broken foot for Christsakes! Of course, he wasn't very good...

I said this in the thread about whether Burns will be a HOF'er: It seems to me that it's easier for forwards to get in.

If he was a forward and still of the same level and he had inflated live puck era stats, his Cups would get him in as another Gillies/Mullen type of inductee.
