The season is almost over and he has decent stats relative to his average ice time (11 goals, 25 points, 12:55 ATOI) on a good team with a strong forward group... but shouldn't he be a bigger part of the team at this point considering how much he's being paid and the way he was acquired? Maybe he simply isn't a good fit or there's no room for him higher in the line-up?

The point of acquiring him was to ease him into the role occupied by Jordan Staal… who is still skating 15+ minutes a night.

Staal turns 36 this summer and his career will be tailing off within the next year or two. That should give Kotkaniemi more like middle-6 ice time, which will be reflective of his contract.

Edit: tonight they’re playing with a preseason-style lineup. He has 1g 1a in the first period.
