Is Jonathan Toews a more Complete Player than Sergei Fedorov?

No.

Fedorov in his short 4 or 5 year prime was quite literally the perfect hockey player. Fastest guy on the ice, hardest shot on the ice, the best stickhandler, usually the best offensive player, and always the best defensive player. Can, and often did, transition smoothly between all 5 skater positions.

Folks always point to the 1993-1996 years to see how dominant he was, but I like to look at the 1997 SCF. In a series that featured guys like Lindros, Leclair, Shanahan, and Brind'amour in their prime years, and a still damn good version of Stevie Y, Fedorov was quite clearly the best player on the ice, outscoring all competition and shutting them down at the same time. Ditto in the series before that, when he outscored peak Joe Sakic while shutting down prime Forsberg. If he hadn't started those playoffs as a defenseman, and had been partnered with say Shanahan instead of Doug Brown, we'd be speaking about that already Smythe-worthy run in the same light as Malkin's 2009 run.

Really is a shame feds never won a smythe he was the most consistently high performer in the playoffs on those teams. Vernon is a blight. Yzerman/feds/lids/hank would of been perfect as the smythe winners.

Toews would have been a 4th liner on those DRW teams.. so no. Hes not as complete as Fedorov.

In his prime, he couldn't hold Federov's jockstrap. That being said, he prime was short. For the balance of his career, I'd say they were more or less equal. This also puts into perspective how much higher Fedorov's short peak was than the rest of his career.

120 point+ season while winning the Selke is pretty much unprecedented.

Lol come on let's not go that far. He would of been behind Yzerman and feds but clearly would of been ahead of draper and larionov.

He wouldnt be able to play on Drapers line tho. It was created for stuff Toews cant handle. So he would be a 4th liner. Draper is ahead of him not in a vacuum but on those red wings teams and the circumstances behind the "grind line".

Sergei Federov was one of my all time favourite players. He was insanely talented. Toews is just a very good, two way forward IMO.

It's not that close.

He wouldnt have been on the Grind line.

The grind line would of been the fourth line. You guys are being ridiculous if you don't think toews would of been the 3c. What could draper do that that toews couldn't? Little better at faceoffs and not quite as fast? Draper was a defensive specialist, a poor mans less skilled toews.

Two different eras hard to compare the two. But Cmon, Fedorov was a superstar. Every time he had the puck it felt like your team was about to get **** on

Fedorov in his prime:

- Hardest shot in NHL (won comp)
- Fastest Skater in NHL (won comp)
- Multiple Selke winner
- Finished 2nd in points in Gretzky

Toews isn't there....

Uhhuh. Maybe when Toews plays defense.

Not "plays defense" as in "backchecks well", or even "backchecks well enough to win a Selke Trophy" - "plays defense" as in "lines up at the blueline, playing a defenseman position, and doing so well enough that your coach thinks you could win a Norris Trophy if you did it full-time."

I consider Doug MacLean's silencing-and-browbeating of Fedorov over here to be one of his greatest crimes ever. (MacLean didn't take it too kindly when Fedorov had critical words for how Zherdev was being managed. MacLean tore him a new one, and Feds learned his lesson - he never spoke up again. :shakehead )

If you had to pick one player, and clone that player 17 times to make an 18-man roster (+ 2 random goalies), there isn't a player I'd pick over Sergei Fedorov in his prime.

5 Fedorov's could score and defend with ease. He had to of been one of the most multi-dimentional players of all time.

Note: Maybe Bobby Orr would be a better choice? IDK because I'm too young to have sen him play.

I have a soft spot for Sergei.... having grown up watching him play. Having said that, what a clutch player Toews is :) He doesn't cease to impress me. And not just this series.

No.

Toews is a fantastic hockey player, but Fedorov was absolutely unreal. Watching him made me fall in love with hockey. <3

My goodness..Fedorov wasn't THAT good. People need to stop romanticising retired Russians from the 90's. Fedorov, Bure, Mogilny, Larionov etc. were all great but there are some great ones playing today as well. Toews is certainly in that category.

Except Doug Gilmour won the Selke in 1993 with 127 points...

But yes, Feds was a terrific player.

Can Toews play defense and win the Hart trophy ? No ?
Well, can he score at least 80 points in a season ? No ?
