Starting to hate the Leafs
His podcast is pretty popular, there are probably still teams/gms/coaches that ask for his advice from time to time. I'd say he got knocked down a few pegs by sportsnet but he's still a legend of the game.

I would venture to guess exactly zero NHL teams ask Don Cherry for advice on anything that affects their franchise.

On where to get the ugliest suits? Sure. Anything about running an NHL team? No way.

It's actually really funny to imagine an NHL general manager calling up Don Cherry and asking his advice. Imagine how the hell that conversation would go

Why is "singling out "immigrants" when it comes to the poppy?

Yes, you can look at in the worst possible way as the current media may dictate to you.

However, it is also very inclusive. As in this is what we do so join us.

I was an immigrant, I was one of "those people" in Canada for years and I wasn't offended at all by what he said. I agree that immigrants should absolutely wear a poppy. I enjoyed Canada's the way of life...the least I could do is wear a little poppy on my shirt to honor those who died for it.

The last location of his restaurant in Ottawa closed in April. There used to be a few around town. No great loss as the food was pretty mediocre in my experience. Google tells me that there are locations in other cities, so I guess that adds to his relevancy as long as any of them remain open. Definitely in the 'waning' phase though.

That's pretty sad, WTF is wrong with Canada?
You know what they say about glass houses? :sarcasm:

The podcast charts in CAN & US are pretty similar (check chartable). "The Don Cherry's Grapevine" podcast surged in Canada when it was new and had huge initial #'s. I guess there was a huge interest on the inside story and all the discussions on the topic were pretty big even outside Hockey fans or HNIC viewers.

Now it's like #5 Hockey Podcast in the country (#33 Sports, #199 in Canada on Spotify overall).

Immigrant here as well, Canadians are the most self hating when it comes to national identity. They have been told that they are a melting pot country, as long as the pot does not include 2nd, 3rd, or 4th generation Canadians than everyone else is awesome.

Disturbing trend when it comes to pride in where you come from, they seem to believe its a bad thing, i think Canadians are big pioneers of this attitude and they dislike Don Cherry because he still likes reminding people that Canada is an awesome place with an Awesome history.

I find most first generation Canadians and fresh immigrants love this country and have more pride for it then the people that live here and take it for granted. There is a lesson to be learned there, nobody wants to learn it from Cherry because hes 100 years old and says a lot of things that would make even young people in the 60's cringe.

Just idly curious. When he was let go (I can’t even remember what it was over now), I thought he might end up biting Sportsnet in the arse a bit by hanging around on another channel, staying relevant, taking pot shots at his old network etc., but other than hearing about a podcast of some sorts, he seems to have completely disappeared from the hockey world.

Am I wrong on this? Is he still relevant, is he still shaping opinion somewhere, or is he really just off the scene now?
He has not been relevant (except to fan boys) for 25+ years.
