I'm having trouble buying new inline skates.

I consider myself an above average skater, w/ plenty of speed and balance, etc. I use to put on any pair of skates, tie them and find a way to use them. Didn't matter if they were top of the line or a borrowed pair.

A little background - I played forward most of my life but switched to defense and played nothing but defense for a solid 3-4 years. I've been playing both positions switching back and forth when needed for the last 3 or so years, mostly on offense. During that run of playing only defense, I started tying my skates tighter and even wrapping the laces around my ankle. I don't know why, but I did... When I needed new skates it was difficult to find ones that fit right. Too much room at the ankle / too much flex forward. I eventually picked up the high end Bauer XRPro's and they didn't feel comfortable at first, but good enough and I adjusted to them, but still tied them tight.

I now need, or want, brand new skates again and I find myself in a similar situation. I bought the Mission's AC1's a few years ago on clearance and never used them. I got a really good price online so I could only get 1 size down instead of 1 1/2 - which I blamed not using them on, but it seemed to be kinda' the same problem with the top ankle. So I continued to use my Bauer skates. Since then I've tried on Tour Code 1, Mission DS2, and one of the higher Bauer models. I looked at the Mission NLS 1, but the price range is a bit steep right now.

So what is my problem? Do I need to adjust with the ankle room after years of tying the skates too tight? Baking the skate didn't seem to help. Are these skates just too big? I feel like I've tried smaller sizes, about as small as I could go but it doesn't seem to make a difference. I use standard D size skates and I can try to double bake the skate, but that would be another purchase that might not work out since you can't bake and try, before you buy.

The skates I currently own (Bauer), are still in good enough condition to continuing using, but in my mind if I went a little looser, I may gain an extra step and more than anything it's bothering me that I can't wear new skates.

Any advice?

Ever try putting in-soles in the footbed to see if that helps fit and comfort? I've heard good things about SuperFeet ones. Never tried or used any in-sole in any of my skates personally.

Superfeet Carbon Pro Hockey Insole [Junior] | Pure Hockey Equipment

If you want higher end skates, you can usually get last year's line of mission/bauer flagship skates at a big discount when the new line comes out. So for Mission, DS1 and for Bauer, APX2R

I have not tried Superfeet, or any in-soles for my skates. My probably is more the width at the top of the skate, feels like a lot of wiggle room while the bottom half of the boot fits as it should. I'm not even sure if it's a problem or just an adjustment I need to make after changing the way I wear my skates for so long. Maybe with the elevation that will help. Through all the pairs I've tried on, and even baked, I haven't tested them on the rink. Just small areas where it just didn't feel right. I know a manager at Purehockey so I'll stop in and see if they have something I can try before buying it. Thanks for the suggestion.

For higher end skates, that's what I use to do when skates were being released every year. I would just get them on clearance. I stopped doing that after the Bauer XRPro's fit as those were high end enough.

so if your foot fits in the footbed fine, it's not really a sizing issue. Are you not tying them tight enough, especially on the eyelets higher up on the skate?

i use longer laces and wrap around the back of the skate. like the added snugness it provides. should go to a LHS or someone you trust and explain exactly the problem your having and if they can help you.

A little delayed here. Yeah, I'm trying not to wrap my skates anymore. I feel the tightness took away some speed from me, but I'm stuck in a situation now where I can't seem to get comfortable with loose skates. Either A) can't find skates that fit right because they're too wide at the top, or B) I'm really not use to it anymore and my ankles doesn't feel comfortable like that anymore, moving side to side at the top of the skate. I'm trying to go up the eyelets all the way, but not wrap around anymore. I'm going to ask my local rink to see if I can skate after games ends a night or 2, maybe try a few different ones I bought and put off using. Maybe I'll get comfortable after a while.
