Okay, so I have fought a few fellow Oiler fans over Nick in the past. I feel like he gets unfairly blamed and disrespected by Oiler fans who I feel are either expecting too much from him offensively, or looking to justify their propping up of Justin Schultz.

Here is an article with some very interesting stats that back up what I have been saying about him all along: he is a top four guy who can play decent minutes and makes very few mistakes. He is a safe, not sexy, player who adds a lot to a team that don't show up on a stat sheet or a highlight reel.

    Thoughts?

He has been much better this season than he was last season. I don't mind him that much and if the price and term is right I wouldn't mind us trying to bring him back next season especially with Smid gone now.

Last season he was playing defense alone. Okay, with J Schultz. Same thing.

I think he's been a lot better this year, how much that has to do with the new system, new d partners or a combination of the both I'm not sure but he's been decent so far.

I am still fine with him as a 5/6/7 guy, only problem is he gets paid like a top 4 guy.

Honestly, rather fairly or unfairly, I thought he was absolute garbage last year. Just terrible. This year is a different story, he seems to have upped his physical game and actually looks pretty good.

Is anyone really criticizing him THIS year? He's been a solid #5

He's been okay. Nothing less. Nothing more. Wouldn't mind having him back at 1.5 mil or something, wouldn't mind if he got up and left.

Ya, I would actually be happy to have him back. He is somthign we need, but not at 3.5 mill. If he would take 1.5 I would even sign him to a 3-4 year deal.

It speaks volumes about the defense core when Nick Schultz is a 'solid guy' on your backend.

What would we be saying about him if he was cashing in on those in-the-slot chances he keeps getting?

what's wrong with Schultz as a bottom pairing dman? We have lots of issues, but that's not one

    Yup.
I posted about that very thing extensively last season.

    J. Shultz is an unmitigated disaster in his own end...he makes any 'D' partner look bad.

I remember N Schultz when he was with the Wild...he was a quiet reliable dman when you put him in a position to succeed.

This teams problem has always been a lack of defenisve depth. That forces players to play above their level of ability and consequently creates a opportunity to fail.

Its still a problem and its one of many reasons why this team is garbage again this season.

This org is starting to get a rep for ruining players.

I'm not angry at either of the Schultz guys.

Justin: We didn't pay anything for him. If we'd coughed up something like a second rounder I'd feel differently.

Nick: Tom Gilbert so so useless in the defensive zone. Never used his size and coughed up the puck too often. Nick Schultz has been a much better person for us and because of his low offence he never gets overplayed like Gilbert did. If you hear his name, he's doing something wrong and you don't hear his name very often.

It's interesting to note that both N.Schultz and Ference were very solid players for playoff quality teams. Does that say something about our system? It's hard to imagine both players actually got worse as soon as they got here.

I'm guessing it has something to do with both our last two coaches using systems that no other teams use.

Or the fact that on playoff teams you have 6 guys interested in keeping the puck out of our net on any given shift and we typically have only 3-4

he has been great for the oilers when he isnt playing with Jschultz, he is a good player but not good enough to babysit a rookie player that is 95% offensive minded

Do you actually like any of the Oiler players or ever have anything positive to say? Didn't your mother tell you "If you have nothing good to say about someone......":shakehead

Unlike Eakins's impenetrable swarm system, which is currently taking the league by storm, right? :sarcasm:

Edit: oh, hang on, I think I misread that. You were including Eakins in our last two coaches, yeah?

He's bad, does nothing really well and makes too much coin for what he brings. He's not a great puck mover, he's not really phsycial, he provides little offense, he's not strong in his own end. He blocks some shots which is nice. He's a group of about 4 or 5 oiler dmen that collectively can't string 2 or 3 good games together.

I think Nick Schultz and Potter take a bit too much heat and are capable 5,6,7 options. If you limit their minutes, they're generally fine.

Nick Schultz has been 100% better than last year. Playing away from Justin Schultz has helped.

I've also seen Nick Schultz deliver some truly thunderous open ice hits this season. Better than anyone else on defense at doing that.
