Agree that is what he was called or agree if he's lived up to that billing so far? I think he was probably Eichel level for hype at draft time, maybe a bit higher.

No one who was taken seriously was calling him that, the most common comparison I remember was Hedman.

Don't know if he'll ever become as valuable as McDavid but maybe Eichel one day. I think he will become a Hedman type eventually, just maybe slightly better/worse.

I agree that he was called that.

Is he worthy of the hype? Not sure. I'd like to vote "too soon to tell". I think defensemen can take a bit longer to fully develop and mature. I think in the next 2-3 years we'll have a better sense if he warranted the hype.

I do think he was super hyped. I might have him as the 2nd most hyped prospect since Crosby after McDavid - he's definitely up there in the top 5.

He’s not going to be as good as McDavid but he’s pretty clearly a special talent. I think he ends up being the (distant) third best no1 overall pick between 2005 and 2018.

I don't think the comparison was meant to say he'd be as good as McDavid, but rather as the "generational" version for defensemen. Considering the numbers he's putting up as a teenager and comparing that to what previous "generational" (or rather franchise defensemen) put up, it's not hard to see why.

Makar is the best and will win the Calder.

No other rookie D man even comes close.

They were calling him the greatest D prospect in the past 30-40 years and was hyped heavily 3 years before the draft even took place.

What’s wrong with that? He was the best D prospect since Potvin it’s not his fault there haven’t been any great D prospects. Still doesn’t change the fact that no one serious was actually comparing him to McDavid as a prospect.
