In the NLA, maximum four imports on the game sheet, eight on the roster (over the whole season, releasing one doesn't free any spot). In the NLB, it's two imports on the game sheet, not sure about the contract limit (usually it's not an issue as NLB teams are on a tight budget and won't always spend to replace an injured player or to add depth during the playoffs).
There is no distinction based on nationality, teams can dress four Canadians or four Germans.
Also note that players such as Brady Murray, Robert Nilsson or Christian Dubé, who spent a part of their development years in Switzerland, don't count as imports.
