Kings could potentially flip him and as a rebuilding team retain some salary

Kovalchuk at 3-4mil per season would be pretty valuable in a 2nd line role.

Which teams are potential suitors?

He has 25 points in 42 games, but there is an alarming 11 game pointless streak in there.

25 in 31 without top line minutes on a terrible team if you ignore that stretch under the new coach

Kovy to MTL for Olofsson+2nd? So essentially 2 seconds for Kovy with some retention.
Or Evans + 2nd for a more NHL-ready player (instead of Olofsson).

Would you move Lehkonen for a retained Kovalchuk and a mid pick?

We need young talent as we’re more looking to retool, not that I agree with that approach

I was thinking a 3rd at most.
yeah thinking a 3rd as well would really entice me to pull the trigger. Habs need more high-end scoring, which Kovy obv used to be and still can provide some flashes of that, for the playoffs. Meanwhile Lehkonen is buried down our depth chart with so many capable top 9 wingers on this team.

Per Capfriendly, he can't be traded until 20-21 unless he waives his NTC. in 20-21 he can submit a 7 team list. Plus his contract is 35+ which creates all sorts of other problems. Basically, he's not going anywhere any time soon.

There’s been some chatter from some people close to the Kings (specifically the Mayor) that Kovalchuk likes the Kings but signed with LA to win a cup. If he wants to win, the Kings can retain and move him for a decent return.

Here’s what he had to say about Kovalchuk:

Ilya Kovalchuk may be on the move. As we’ve said since early December, the Kings are happy with him. He’s a pro off the ice. He also signed to be part of a Cup contending team. LA certainly doesn’t fit the bill this season or next. If he moves on, will that impact the Kings ability to sign prospect Nikolai Prokhorkin this summer, Kovalchuk’s St. Petersburg SKA (KHL) teammate? Hmmmmm. If the 35-year-old Russian sniper is dealt soon, look for the Kings to retain about $1.5-2 million of cap space as part of the transaction.
