What a joke that is. How is the only best on best tournament rated the same as the world championships? The WC happen every year also so the Olympics are pretty worthless.

Well. Not really. This as other rankings in other sports decide their ranking because of several tournaments/matches.

You really think Greece should have been ranked number 1 in the world in soccer in 2004?

This I do agree with. The Olympics should count more in terms of points earned.

Yeah, its not like that best of the best tournament has two important games for each top6 country ( 1/2, final or bronze game ).

Yeah, lets make ranking based on two games.

There will probably be endless whining about it as usual, but people should realize that no judgement goes into it. It's just a mathematical formula used for seeding IIHF tournaments. If you don't give weight to the World Championships then just don't give weight to this ranking.

No but it should be weighted. Olympics worth 2000 points WCs worth 500 or something.

The IIHF is a joke of an organization anyways. Who cares what they think or what their rankings are? The fact that they hold their World Championships at a time when the worlds best players aren't available show how meaningless they and their tournaments/rankings are.

Canada has won 3 of the last 5 best on best tournaments that mean anything.... period.

Canada wins whenever their best players are available.

That being said, there is no excuse for their lack of success at the World Championships and that is why we're ranked lower than #1. The same Canadian fans who brag that our B team could beat any other nation's best team are the same people who cite our best players still playing in the NHL playoffs as an excuse for losing at the WC's.

Canada still fields a good enough team to win there without Crosby, Toews, Doughty etc. No excuses. We deserve the #3 spot we have until we start to learn to win outside of the Olympics.

While the Olympics should be weighted more, the WC have to have some importance. Canadians often state how good their depth is, and the WC as far as I am concerned, is a good way to measure depth.

The 2002 Olympics and the 2010 Olympics are meaningless at this point.

Yes we should do better but Hockey Canada almost treats the WCs has a training method for young players to prepare for stuff like the Olympics.

Iceland poised to make a legit run at gold in 2018 at #35.

I wouldn't count them out.

That rating system means nothing.

The rankings are from 4 year span. Theres no question Canada is worlds best team but the point in this ranking is to look at all the 4 year span and rank teams accordingly. Otherwise why should there even be rankings everyone can see Canada won gold nr1 Sweden silver nr2 Finland bronze nr3

True, and I was also just thinking about the fact that several good players who are available choose not to play. That does have an impact as well.

I still think that Canada should be contending for gold at the WC's every year, though, unless the roster is exceptionally weak.

How about this time, Canadians actually also act like they do not care and just not comment about it? Please?

No, you're 3rd based on results, nobody is arguing Canada is #1 on paper. Oh and the WC not being best on best is hardly an excuse considering Canada always has by far the best team in the tournament.

People should care since that's how participants for 2018 Olympics are decided..

I think the Olympics result should get a 1.5x modifier compared to WCs though.

I'd rank the Olympics at least twice as highly in terms of available points as the World Championships. Rating them the equivalent to one another is actually insulting to the best players in the world. The quality of competition of simply at another level during the Olympics and the prestige is infinitely higher.
