There are a few rules that are obvious (libel, offensive language, offensive images, sexists comments, etc.), and then there are the rules that are a bit more difficult to interpret. Unfortunately, the Flaming and Trolling rules have been broken far too often as of late. As volunteer mods, we love this team too, and enjoy discussing hockey as posters with everyone else.
Unfortunately, the level of flaming and trolling has been on the increase as the games take on additional significance. We have tried to refrain from thread-banning, warning, or infracting people (usually editing or deleting posts instead). It appears that it makes no difference.
The basic adage: Critique the post, not the poster. Example:
versus:
First is critiquing the post. The second is critiquing the poster. In an actual debate, the moderator would NEVER allow ad-hominem attacks. Similarly, the HF rules also do not allow this:
Most of this is very clear, but the bolded may not be quite as clear. Do NOT label segments of the population in launching an attack - it's still considered Flaming, and the posts will be deleted, you'll be thread-banned, or warned/infracted for it. Similarly:
Trying to hide trolling with a isn't going to work. This contributes nothing to the conversation, and simply invites more bickering and personal attacks.
As an example: the latest PGT has had almost 1/4 of the total posts either deleted or edited due to either trolling or flaming. I hope this is fair warning that this behaviour won't be tolerated anymore. We're all fans of the same team, and there are some really good opinions on both sides of various debates. I've personally learned a lot from many of the posters, simply by keeping an open mind.
Prior to posting, as yourself: is this addressing the points made by the other poster, or is it directed at the poster themselves? If it's the latter, consider not posting it, or editing.
And finally: if you truly can't get along with another poster, USE THE IGNORE feature. Put them on ignore. Simple as that.
Thanks in advance from the HFJets mods.

The basic adage: Critique the post, not the poster. Example:
I disagree that we should play [player x] - I'd rather see [player y] in his place, as he brings more to the table in [z areas].
versus:
You must have a screw loose if you think we should play [player y] over [player x]

Flaming: Do not post any messages that harass, insult (name calling), belittle, threaten or mock other members. Debates are fine, but critique the opinion, not the person. Personal attacks are not permitted. Do not call other posters trolls. Do not use sweeping generalizations and plural pronouns to cloak personal attacks. For example if a poster(s) states that he thinks 'x' is a good idea, replying that "Anyone who supports 'x' is an idiot" is a personal attack. Do not start threads to call out and embarrass other members; or make posts about ignore lists.
Most of this is very clear, but the bolded may not be quite as clear. Do NOT label segments of the population in launching an attack - it's still considered Flaming, and the posts will be deleted, you'll be thread-banned, or warned/infracted for it. Similarly:
Trolling: Do not make posts or threads with the sole intent of starting a dispute. Please note that a person disagreeing with your opinion is NOT trolling. Please keep it civil even if you're sure the other person is wrong. When visiting the team forums, please note that these are fan forums for that team and are here mainly for the enjoyment of that team's fans. Do not visit team forums to cheer against nor demean their team. In other words, if you want to cheer for the Habs and criticize the Bruins, do it on the Habs board. And if someone is doing the opposite on the Bruins board, don't start flaming them to defend the honor of your team. Either ignore it or respectfully disagree and move on. Wishing illness or injury on someone will be regarded as trolling or offensive in most cases. We do not permit any forums to be used to demean/insult the fans of other teams. This is viewed as trolling/flaming. Copying posts from one HFBoard forum to another for this purpose is considered trolling/flaming as well.
