I'd get to managment before the 2003 draft and tell them to forget about Phaneuf, trade the pick with Anaheim and drop to pick Getzlaf . Then grab Bergeron, Weber & Backes in the 2nd rnd. We could still get Pavelski & Buff with late round picks.

With that 1 draft we'd have 3 bonafide centres that Iggy was dying to play with, another power F RWer behind Iggy, and 2 physical game changers on D. We'd have been cup winners at least a couple more times!

Ofcourse they'd just call security on me and kick me out, and continue to draft guys like Ramholt, Donally, Tardiff, Moore, Tyler Johnson (no not that Tyler Johnson), Bellmare, Cunning, and Harvey, who combined for 13 NHL games....

Keep D. Sutter as coach and get a GM who can sign a respectable backup that can keep Kipper fresh for the playoffs.

Enjoy a cup win in 2006 or 2007

I'd tell Gelina to park his ass in front of that crease and be ready for that rebound so there'd be nothing to argue about.

Instead of drafting bustkowski I would’ve drafted the guy I always wanted, and a franchise dman in hindsight, Brady skjei

i'll keep it somewhat current and say go back to 2014 draft and take Larkin instead of Bennett. We would then have a center that could keep up with McDavid....

Pasta would have looked great with Johnny & Mony, but could've nabbed Point too, and then Sorokin & Shesty were late G picks.

    A time machine?

Shrewd investing would mean I'd be the owner of the Flames by now, have funded my own damn arena, and have OKG in a cage in the Flames room to yell, uh, inspiring remarks at the coaching staff.

I’ll also add drafting a Kucherov instead of a Wotherspoon and Ma Granlund.

I think if we played Phaneuf in the '04 playoffs, we'd have won.

I think if we traded Phaneuf after his rookie season for a proper 1C, we win more games.

I think if Darryl stayed as a coach vs GM, we also win more.

More like trade down and take Larkin + Pasta and revise the 3rd rounder to take Brayden Point.

Heck, try and pick up Lemieux if possible.

Looking back, Fleury was cut in 09 because he was old and not good but does anybody think he could have been better over the course of that season than say, Dave Moss?

Wasn't the whole thing a publicity stunt for his book? Rumours are the Flames wanted to sign him but Theo said no.

Oh okay I hadn't heard those rumours. But also at the time I remember Darryl saying he wasn't top 6 so he was out. Of course that's moot because you're right he probably had no intention of actually playing, just a publicity stunt.

Point is super frustrating. He had 90+ points in his draft year leading his team with a 36 point gap on their second leading scorer and he's from Calgary.

We passed on him to take an overage refrigerator and a defensive d man.

Really? I hadn't heard that. I remember him complaining later on that season how he was upset that he got cut when under performing guys were getting to play. I recall him calling out Conroy.

Yes my recollection as well was he was told he had to earn a Top 6 spot to get a contract offer. He seemed genuinely upset in interviews after that to me.

Note that he says nothing about being cut, however.

    Yup. Trying to sell books.
I was watching his old highlights. Fun to watch, he was dang good. At hockey.

Also, I used Moss as a comparable in 09, and only now am I remembering Fleury trashing him too...was it Fleury? During that year or a year later talking about the talent level of the league he said something like "the league sucks, just look at David Moss, a top 6 winger"

I would go back and tell Iggy that I am sorry for the upcoming future where we ended up ‘wasting’ his career with no supporting cast.

last night I got sucked in the YouTube wormhole and ended up watching a bunch of Iggy videos. What a player! Most important the determination he had to win games... if only some of our players had a fraction of that. I would trade Johnny, Monahan and a first rounder for prime Iggy.

I too will make this about Iginla. However I am taken back to 2003 and will try to make this realistic as possible - draft Jeff Carter and David Backes instead of Dion Phaneuf and Tim Ramholt. I didn’t pick Patrice Bergeron instead of Backes as didn’t want to look too greedy.

So coming out of the lockout our top 4 forwards in Iggy’s core years would of been Iginla, Carter, Langkow and Backes.

I go back and crash my vehicle into Craig Button's to prevent him making his way to the office and waiving Marty St. Louis and trading Marc Savard for Ruslan Zaynullin. I then reap the rewards of a top line of St.Louis - Savard - Iginla for the next decade.
