If the playoffs started right now and used the old conference playoff format (#1 faces #8 etc.) instead of the current one.

Eastern Conference:

#1 Tampa Bay Lightning vs. #8 New York Islanders
#2 Boston Bruins vs. #7 Columbus Blue Jackets
#3 Toronto Maple Leafs vs. #6 Pittsburgh Penguins
#4 Washington Capitals vs. #5 New Jersey Devils

Western Conference:

#1 Vegas Golden Knights vs. #8 Minnesota Wild
#2 Nashville Predators vs. #7 Dallas Stars
#3 Winnipeg Jets vs. #6 Los Angeles Kings
#4 St. Louis Blues vs. #5 San Jose Sharks

Should the NHL go back to this format? Or should they choose another one?

This is literally #1 through #8 in the standings. Washington is worse than all three ATL division teams this year, so they're 4th
You have mentioned the old format. In the old format the winners of the divisions were placed above others. So Washington would be in 2nd place

No reason for the East to not be this. Or with Washington #2, whatever.

#1 Vegas Golden Knights vs. #8 Minnesota Wild
#2 Nashville Predators vs. #7 Dallas Stars
#3 Winnipeg Jets vs. #6 Los Angeles Kings
#4 St. Louis Blues vs. #5 San Jose Sharks

This is why the current format exists. Or, the compromise that is the current format. Possibly three series that span three time zones. The 2nd round could potentially see two. The 3rd round could be the same.

If the league and PA can agree to go back to a 1-8, more power to them. If they can't, then deal with it.
