Next blow for Vienna: One month after singing a new contract and three weeks before the first preseason game, head coach Dave Cameron is unexpectedly leaving the ship to join Ottawa 67s (OHL). There is something going very wrong with Vienna Capitals right now.

EDIT: Forgot to add later. Boyd's contract with Linz has been terminated by mutual agreement.

With the season being so close I checked out the rosters and Olimpija.. Damn.. They are going to get hammered. That just is not a competitive roster in this league.

It's going to be brutal, no doubts but let's see who of the youngsters will swimm and who ll sink....that's about the only point of participation.

I d be surprised if they finish 2nd to last

It has been said before that Vienna fans have reason to be a little concerned about the quality of their roster. Now 11 days before the start of the regular season, Vienna Capitals have the following preseason results on their record:

2-6 vs Slovan Bratislava
2-4 vs Hradec Králové
0-8 vs Hradec Králové
2-3 after shootout vs Ingolstadt
0-10 vs Straubing Tigers

Vienna with more unwanted news:

Trailing HK Nitra 1-5 after an underwhelming performance (with 4 goals against within 9 minutes), Vienna decided to rought it up which led to Nitra walking off the ice midway through the second period. The game didn't resume.

Nitra sources are saying Vienna players started "hunting down" Nitra youngsters. Nitra announced it will not want to play a game with Capitals for the next 10 years at least.

Correct call by Nitra staff management, no need for that in pre-season friendlies between teams from different leagues. However, I can't really figure out how does Vienna stink so bad. Their roster is not THAT awful to be getting demolished by Slovak league teams.

Agreed on both points.

By the way, I forgot to add another roster move Vienna had to make: Recently signed Jordan Caron surprisingly announced his retirement and Vienna has signed Nicolai Mayer (last with Porin Ässät).

First round of the regular season is today. Games:

Linz vs Salzburg
The home time has added some depth to avoid the troubles they've been through last year. Starting with the same coach who managed to get something out of a weaker roster late last roster, they can be expected to be much more competitive this season. But Salzburg has upgraded its roster after a disappointing season, got results in the Champions Hockey League and should walk away with a win here.

Fehervar vs Villach
Intesting match-up. Fehervar will be hard pressed to repeat the great first 2/3s of the 2020-21 season but their roster looks solid. They should be a playoff team. Villach has the roster to play for a top spot and this time they don't start with a new coach. Expectations are rather high. They were high last year too, but a repeat of the letdown is unlikely.

Innsbruck vs Ljubljana
The two teams faced-off one week ago and Innsbruck won 4-0. The home team looks like they're more set on avoiding goals against than in previous years, which should serve them well this season. Meanwhile Ljubljana will struggle to finish anywhere but last in the league. Anything but 3 points for Innsbruck would be a surprise.

Graz vs Dornbirn
Both teams have completely overhauled their rosters -- Graz because they were disastrous last season while Dornbirn were good but couldn't resign the players. It remains to be seen what Dornbirn coach Kai Suikkanen can do with this roster. With several late signings, it wouldn't be surprising if his team had a slow start into the season. Graz look set for a new start and should pick up points here.

Bratislava Capitals vs Pustertal/Bruneck
Without looking really bad, newcomer HC Pustertal has struggled a bit in the preseason. Bratislava goes into the season with a more competitive roster than last year and should take advantage of the expansion team here.

Klagenfurt vs Vienna
The defending champion has kept its roster mostly intact and has a good track record in the Champions Hockey League. Vienna on the other hand has gone through a complete roster change (a downgrade, at that) and has struggled a lot in the preseason. All money is on 3 points for Klagenfurt.

Bolzano vs Znojmo
Bolzano has a strong roster again, albeit with a little less depth than last season and a new coach in Doug Mason who was shown the door in Graz. Znojmo are back in the league. Not sure about their depth, but they have always been competitive in the past and should be once more this season.

Games yesterday (Friday, September 17):

Linz vs Salzburg 0-4
Salzburg proved a too much to handle for Linz, got an early 2-0 lead and their win was never in doubt. For Linz, their next game against Villach should be much more of an indicator.

Fehervar vs Villach 5-1
Strong game by Fehervar who outplayed Villach. VSV hasn't found their groove yet and got weak goaltending from Andreas Bernard who conceded two weak goals. Fehervar, however, does look like a site that will cause many opponents trouble.

Innsbruck vs Ljubljana 4-3
After the easy win one week ago, Innsbruck took this one too lightly. Ljubljana surprised with a more intense effort and got two quick goals to make it 2-0. The shocked hosts couldn't get going, but finally scored a shorthanded goal just before the end of the period. Then they took over and worked themselves to a 3-2 lead before they added an empty-netter. A late goal for Ljubljana didn't change the outcome, but the Slovenian club gave a solid effort. Future opponents better take note.

Graz vs Dornbirn 2-3 OT
Underwhelming effort by Graz through two periods, which allowed Dornbirn to go ahead 2-0. In the third period Graz finally took over and dominated. They scored twice to tie the game, but couldn't get a third goal. In the overtime, Dornbirn netted one and that sealed it. Both coaches will feel their team has to up their game going forward.

Bratislava Capitals vs Pustertal/Bruneck 2-3
A little surprise in Bratislava and a bad start into the season for the home team. They went ahead twice, but both times the league newcomers from Pustertal managed to equalize the score. Pustertal looked a bit shaky defensively, but were able to create something offensively.

Klagenfurt vs Vienna 5-0
Vienna is in the worst shape it's been for maybe 10 years. The Capitals were underhwelming all game and got dominated easily by Klagenfurt. The score could have been higher. Add insult to injury: two players (Clifford Pu and Shawn Lalonde) didn't dress because they are apparently looking for a way out of the club.

Bolzano vs Znojmo 5-4
An early lead for the visitors, but Bolzano answered with three quick goals to make it 3-1. However, Znojmo put up a fight and after the second period the score was close with a 4-3. In the third, Bolzano went up by two goals once more to win the game. A late goal by Znojmo couldn't change the outcome anymore, but new Bolzano coach Doug Mason can't be happy with 4 goals against at home.
