TBN: I was surrounded by “cloud and atmosphere of negativity” during time with Sabres

Lehner is basically a troll who provokes people and then is offended when they respond. The things he said to the media are responsible for the way he was treated here. Some of his interviews were so over the top he should have been institutionalized right then and there. Chad Johnson had a worse year. He didn't go running off at the mouth and wasn't treated like a clown. Lehner needs to quit giving these lengthy interviews after he tells us what he thinks about Andrew Allen.

Remember the Trump sticker on his helmet? He was a troll.

If he thinks that’s bad he should try having to be surrounded by it AND having to watch him in shootouts.

No empathy for him at this point . I can understand what he's going through when he talks about depression but it wasn't the citys fault he played like absolute garbage.

He's not really saying anything that wasn't obviously true. Everything surrounding the team has been very negative for years, from the fans to the media. It ain't for no reason, but that doesn't make him incorrect.
It doesn't really matter if it's true or not. It's unprofessional and insulting to say it publicly. It's not like he wasn't a big contributor both to the negativity and the constant losing.

Maybe the suicidal drunk contributed to the negativity? just a thought. Hilarious to imagine this drug addict now acting all holier than thou. f*** off Robin. im sure you were a pleasure for our young kids to be around.

As someone who has used many substances his crying piece article this year made me sick...all the people calling him heroic blah blah. He is still an alcoholic *** hole now he is just a dry drunk.

He deserves no sympathy. No one forced that drink down his throat and when he got clean (which is a lot easier when you are a millionaire athlete with unlimited resources) he wrote that piece for self serving sympathy. It is clear to see when he opens his yap and continues to belittle the team and city that cared more about him then his performance. Botts should have been ruthless and not have unconditionally supported this guy.

Like the Islanders have any chance in the playoffs....they'll get a quick boot out of the first when they realize you have to actually score to win games.

St Louis...NYI...Toronto.

Fun fact since the 04-05 lockout the Sabres have just as many series wins then those 3 combined

There are people who hated on him from the moment the trade happened even if the cost was typical of quality prospect netminders that summer (Lehner, Andersen, Jones all went for the same sort of return). And they never, ever let anyone forget how that they disliked it.

Lehner won 42 games in 3 seasons here. Anderson and Jones nearly won that many games in their first season from being acquired. And both were more established and better when acquired. Lehner was and is trash.

Lehner couldn't even make a single save in the shootout and now we are going to reminisce over him?

Greiss is doing the same exact numbers as Lehner. It js the system and team why he is doing as good as he is.

He’s not wrong though this is true of any sports town that suffers through years of losing. Winning changes everything. Glad he is happy and healthy, life is more important than hockey.

I don't understand who it is insulting towards. Whiney? Probably. Deflecting? Definitely.

I mean have you met Buffalo sports media? Or a massive contingent of the fans? He’s not entirely wrong.

That said, since our last winning season ALMOST A DECADE ago, we’ve gone a cumulative 228-309-80. Can you blame fans for being easily annoyed after almost ten years of losing almost 2 of every 3 games?

This is the internet and all, but some of the reactions here are pretty gross. Would be great if he didn't feel the need to highlight just the one part of his struggles that perpetuates Buffalo's poor reputation.

Good for him and the Islanders that he's getting better. Maybe we shouldn't use his success elsewhere as an example of a bad trade anymore; I doubt staying here would've helped the team.

Buffalo is the greatest place on earth when its team is consistently winning and the worst place on earth when the team is consistently losing.

Why does this guy need to keep talking about Buffalo? This is the 2-3rd time /after/ his piece at The athletic that he’s come out spewed negativity about Buffalo.

He’s on a team that’s going to the playoffs why are we still living rent free in his head?

Btw he says fans booed when the team got on the ice, and the media was shit. How about winning? He’s just one player, yes, but Buffalo is one of the true hockey markets in league. Of course there’s going to be booing if the team stinks. Lehner also deserved the on ice criticism for being horrendous in shootouts.

So, he develops an addiction, through his own life choices, and then points the finger at WNY and Sabres fans as a catalyst as to why his lot in life sucked, all while collecting a lucrative paycheck from those very fans?

Get the fook outta here Robyn.

You and you alone are responsible and accountable for YOUR choices in life. Hockey fans in Buffalo have been paying to see a subpar product for near a decade now, YOU were a member of that subpar product. They PAID, you GOT PAID, big difference here, fans in Buffalo have every right to boo you, they spend money to see you and your team mates perform, you didn't show up, don't use an addiction as an excuse for letting them down. It's pathetic you'd attempt to put that crutch under your arm and act as though the fan base wounded you, worthless POS.

A good bit of what he says is accurate, even if gratuitous. He had a single bad season here and people act like he was Jocelyn Thibault in a Sabres uni. The locker room is a mess, and the media thrives in that cesspool - and make no mistake, the media loves it.

I’ll be honest, if I got kicked by the fanbase and media the way Lehner did on his way out the door, and then had the season he’s having while Buffalo had the season it’s having, I’d probably dunk on them a little bit too.
