I think Marner is going to have a better year than Matthews

It could depend on context.

Pretend they both play great...which of these seasons would you classify as better?

82 games played | 50 goals | 30 assists | 80 points | Auston Matthews
82
games played | 20 goals | 70 assists | 90 points | Mitchell Marner

Unless Marner turns out to have other-worldly chemistry with Tavares, he won't be outscoring Matthews.

Nah. Marner's great but Matthews is the clearly superior talent and player.

There's separation between them in a lot of areas...but I wouldn't consider talent to be one of them:

- Matthews is a more talented shooter/scorer
- Marner is a more talented passer/playmaker

With that said....I would say that Matthews:

- is taller, heavier & stronger
- plays a more important position
- has a more developed defensive game

None of which has to do with talent.

As in goals...I would agree. Points are a different thing altogether

True. But if Matthews starts getting legitimate PP time, his raw production will be insane. His ES numbers are absurdly good, there's zero reason to believe that he can't carry his talent over to the PP if given the opportunity.

I hope they both kill it. Marner looking to shoot more as well (which he needs)
The leafs cannot win without both of them having a great year

I think <Leaf> is better than <Leaf> although <Leaf> is pretty good too. Actually, you could argue <Leaf> is as good, or almost as good, as either of them. And now that we have <Leaf>, <Leaf>, <Leaf> and <Leaf> will have more room to operate. Even then, don’t forget <Leaf> and his nifty mittens.

I actually predict Marner will start slow and heat up throughout the season. He seems to have this pattern going back to his draft year at the very least like some kind of Rocky story arc: slow start, crisis in confidence, gets back to work, gets red hot, finishes the year on a tear.

Matthews will just consistently truck, and hopefully he's fully healthy this year.

If Matthews is healthy he is generational right now.
Marner could become an all star because of his insane vision and creativity.

I think it comes down to their leftwingers.
Marleau is approaching 40...can he finish those Matthews and Nylander passes?
How much will Hyman hold marner and tavares back?

If it were up to me I wouldn't have either of them top 6...
It would be Johnsson,Kapanen and perhaps Grundstrom..
