I Came to Trade Gardiner Not to Bury Him

My clear headed assessment of Gardiner’s future or lack thereof with the Maple Leafs.

Opinion and not so much rumour. Gardiner perhaps being an upcoming UFA might be part of the rationale for him in trade scenarios.

The leafs need a true shut down defenceman, they can afford package Gardiner (per OP) as we have sandin, liljegren.

Jake has peaked and would benefit a team in need of a puck moving defenceman than the leafs do

To all the posters on here who think we are not in a win now mode. Yes i love lillgren/sandin but they aren't ready now and thats what we need with our team.

The only reason we package jake is if a)he wants the moon in contract/salary
or b)he doesn't want to resign here for some reason

And if we do package him it will be for a equivalent defender. Jake makes blunders but so does every OFD.

The thread poster saying is it well known we will be moving gardiner is a joke. Where has leafs mgmt stated that? or is it just sports net goofs spewing garbage? unless dubas has stated that then there is no reason to think that.

Most likely he will resign here after putting up great numbers with our team.

I think there's been more signs that they want to re-sign him than that they are looking to trade him.

Trade him. As long as it's a good return and fills the hole on the right side.

Dermott isn't ready to fill it? He was really good last year, the 3rd pairing is ideal for him to start out unlike last year where it was more trial by fire, and he largely succeeded. And we've got Borgman and Rosen back there who may be ready to take the next step.

I'm totally confident with trading Gardiner. Dermotts got a higher hockey IQ and plays with more jam, Borgman the same (He's the dark horse ).

I think there are some posters who think the Leafs are in a win now mode.

That isn't true they are in an upward trend to become a perennial contender. When you can't win a single round of the playoffs, you are not a contender.

Some of the players like Lilijegren, Dermott, Borgman, Sandin, ... are going to be key pieces perhaps more than veterans like Gardiner.

Yes buddy, but not this season lol.

We are in a win now mode. Not saying mortgage the future but we are definitely ready to win now or else JT wouldn't have come here..

Dubas feels Jake is part of the core and unless a huge overpayment, Jake will be signed long term.

Why would you hope Jake isn't resigned and all goes well?

Not if all goes well. Also I find using o e player as a scapegoat is not fair.

That said I would have no issue trading Gardiner for a return that improves the team. I have my thoughts on what that would be bit I wouldn't trade him because I think he sucks, because that's not true

The thing is, the saying actually means that you are in a position where you need to win now, that is the team is running out of time and they need to throw every asset at trying to make it happen.

What you are talking about is more about being a contender. We're ready to compete, but we are not desperate.

That could be your perception of that.

For me it means our team is an instant contender for the cup this year.

I understand we have over a 7 year window to compete perennially but for people to state "trade gardiner because we have sandin and lilgren" is ignorant because they are not ready this season where as our team is ready to compete at the highest level for a cup this season(thats why tavares chose us over his old team that was not).

No one is saying trade the farm because our team has 1 year to win. What I am saying is that it's really dumb to trade gardiner for someone who doesn't have his replacement value THIS year because we are ready to win this year.

Like i previously said we only trade Gardiner if a)he doesn't want to resign here and makes it clear, b)he wants way to much in contract/term negotiations or a very rare scenario c) another GM wants to trade for Gardiner and gives up a solid return with a defender ready to play now.

Correct. We have a massive window..our oldest core player is 27 lol but we are also ready now due to the high skill of our core young players.

The fact is Gardiner isn't the type of defenseman we need. Trouba is. I don't agree with Dubas that he is a part of the future. Gardiner, Brown + (?) for Trouba.

We are loaded with wingers and need to start using these assets to get what we need, one more good top 3 Dman. There is the chance we meet Tampa Bay first round next year.

Gardiner is who he is and at this point he's not gonna change. Tired of the brain farts and non-physical play.

EDITED TO ADD: Andersen will be on my **** list next if he has another playoffs like last one.

We need good d-men. Gardiner is that. Even if we didn't have a shortage of good d-men, quality comes way before fit.

A lot of people do this when in fact Jake was as significant piece of our record-breaking team.

his fit is also very nice for the Leafs. his transition and offensive game are excellent, and that's the vision Dubas has. Mobile defensemen who push the play the other way

Well every player has brain farts and he has far less than he uses too. I'm also not a fan of the non physical play but he is good at what he does.
My argument here is that he's a good top 4 defenseman is all.
