Staal wasn't a #1. Nor were Yashin, Heatley, Spezza, or Bouwmeester.

Getting past that, Lindros was definitely #1. I'd say Ovechkin has been #2 with Daigle, Kovalchuk, Thornton and Lecavalier (in that order) close behind. None of the rest really were hyped as much as those guys that I remember.

I really can't remember Yashin much back then, so I'm leaving him off. Spezza had more hype than half of the 1st round picks there. Also, too many people forget the hype surrounding Lecavalier. He was being compared to Lemieux just like Ovechkin is, but even moreso.

Good list. Another who deserves mention on the hyped non #1 picks list is Radek Bonk.

I made it 1997 and after for me, because that's when I really started following the draft. I ranked them, not on hype, but on how scouts would possibly rank them based on their draft day selves.
