Staal wasn't a #1. Nor were Yashin, Heatley, Spezza, or Bouwmeester.

Getting past that, Lindros was definitely #1. I'd say Ovechkin has been #2 with Daigle, Kovalchuk, Thornton and Lecavalier (in that order) close behind. None of the rest really were hyped as much as those guys that I remember.

That I know, but they were all talked about as possible #1's.

Tough job! I'll do my best:

    #1 - Eric Lindros
    #2 - Alexandre Daigle
    #3 - Vincent Lecavalier
    #4 - Alexander Ovechkin
    #5 - Joe Thornton
    #6 - Roman Hamrlik
#7 - Ilya Kovalchuk (he didn't get as much time to build hype as the others)
    #8 - M.A. Fleury
    #9 - Ed Jovanovski
    #10 - Patrick Stefan
    #11 - Rick DiPietro
    #12 - Chris Phillips

With the non #1 picks on your list, I'd probobly have it:

    #1 - Jason Spezza
    #2 - Jay Bouwmeester
    #3 - Eric Staal
    #4 - Dany Heatley

I really can't remember Yashin much back then, so I'm leaving him off. Spezza had more hype than half of the 1st round picks there. Also, too many people forget the hype surrounding Lecavalier. He was being compared to Lemieux just like Ovechkin is, but even moreso.

Good list. Another who deserves mention on the hyped non #1 picks list is Radek Bonk.

I guess I'm wondering by who? The media, fans or scouts? All of the above?

I made it 1997 and after for me, because that's when I really started following the draft. I ranked them, not on hype, but on how scouts would possibly rank them based on their draft day selves.

    Alexander Ovechkin
    Vincent Lecavalier
    Ilya Kovalchuk
    Joe Thornton
    Jason Spezza
    Jay Bouwmeester
    Dany Heatley
    Rick Nash
    Eric Staal
    Patrik Stefan
    Marc-Andre Fleury
    Rick DiPietro

    04. Vincent Lecavalier
    05. Ilya Kovalchuk

I concur. I'll also add Zherdev in that list. Many people assumed he was a clear-cut #1 choice at the end of 02-03.
