Please play the Leafs. I want to get in on a whole Hog cook.Barring the unpredictable NC weather this time of year (last week we had Tornadoes and light snowfall within two days of each other), this should be the most epic tailgate the NHL has ever seen.
Dundon and Don Waddell, the Hurricanes’ president and general manager, have been in constant contact with league officials about securing the game and in negotiations with N.C. State athletic director Boo Corrigan in securing Carter-Finley Stadium as the venue.
...
Waddell said gaining NHL approval for the game required the Hurricanes receiving financial commitments from local organizations and government to help offset the Hurricanes’ cost for presenting the game and concert. Waddell, in the letter to the authority, said the Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau has committed $125,000 and that it was anticipated the bureau would increase that amount to $200,000.
It feels pretty obvious that this will be a HEAVILY tailgate-oriented event, maybe even more so after the recent traffic debacle in Colorado Springs. The area’s infrastructure can handle an event of this scale, but it’s almost always based on all-day events like college football or the state fair (which draws up to 100K/day). So to keep this in line with infrastructure limits, presumably this will be scheduled as a “come 6 hours early for the pregame *wink*” type of program.
Should be interesting to see how the Canes handle the game presentation. Since early in the process of courting the NHL, they’ve been playing up the idea of it being less of a league-wide showcase and more about fan service for the locals. Given the org’s generally unorthodox personality, there might be an element of “let’s get weird” to this one.
