Since the lockout, so 2005/06 to date, the following D have put up 1.0 PPG or better in the WHL as a U19 player:

1.275- Ty Smith (this season)
1.265- Brenden Kichton
1.24 - Josh Morrissey
1.20 - David Quenneville
1.18 - Ivan Provorov
1.14 - Tyson Barrie
1.13 - Shea Theodore
1.13 - Henri Jokiharju
1.12 - Calen Addison (this season, it's early)
1.06 - Ty Smith (age 17!)
1.05 - Jake Bean
1.03 - Joe Hicketts
1.02 - Derrick Pouliot
1.02 - Jusso Valimaki
1.02 - Ivan Provorov (age 17!)
1.00 - Morgan Rielly (age 17!)

Bean is some good company, with Morrissey, Provorov, Barrie, Theodore, Reilly, even Jokihajru. Valimaki looks promising but Pouliot is bust.

In AHL this season Jake Bean leads all rookie defensemen in points (30), is tied for 1st among rookies D in goals (9), tied for second in assists (21). Maybe Bean, not Fox, is our best prospect after Necas.

Don't sleep on Aleksi Saarela. He's only put up 13 points and 7 goals in his last 15 games. If I recall, it took him some time to get rolling last season as well. Guy is pretty much a sniper who can play with a bit of an edge.

Does Saarela have the heart and size to play wing in the NHL? That is my question with this guy. Or is he Finnish Zach Boychuk? Maybe we'll get a chance to see.

I have thought the same thing. If Bean comes up, the Canes can keep all the RHD and have three terrific pairings.

Slavin/Hamilton
de Haan/Faulk
Bean/Pesce

Or if Faulk is traded:
Slavin/Pesce
de Haan/Hamilton
Bean/TVR

Those pairings look fantastic, but we're missing the playoffs if we do it. Look, I get that we have depth on defense, and that we love our guys, but any team that has Brett Pesce on the third pairing is *too* deep on defense. We'd have too many holes elsewhere in the lineup (see the current iteration of the team for reference). It's simply not smart, and that's why nobody else does it.

Spending 50 percent of our internal budget so that we can bragg that "we have six top-4 defensemen" or get a few shout-outs in preseason magazines is a great way to finish 10th.

You can most certainly do it while they are on ELCs. Of course something would have to give in the long term.

What's the plan then? Bean/Fox aren't ready for anything than third pair at the moment.

You guys are right. Let's just load up on defense. Get eight top-4 guys. Play Pesce on the fourth pair. That sounds like great asset management. What will it take to get Ekblad?

We’ll be the first team to ice three forward lines and four defense pairings.

Or just get really crazy and roll three defensemen and two forwards at a time.

What does size have to do with playing wing in the NHL exactly? I'd say there's more than a few sub 6 foot wingers doing alright, the league is getting smaller and it's already the least size dependant position. Maybe he's just a AAAA player, but questioning his size makes no sense to me

You convinced me. Let's trade All
ALL the D men and only play forwards. Hyperbole is so much fun, way better than acknowledging others argument.

There's more than one way to build a team. The Canes can quite easily afford the assets to trade for Miller or Kapanen, plus throw over $9m at Duchene. That team finishing 10th?

We aren't spending that much on the attack. I don't understand why we cannot roll up with Slavin/Pesce/CDH/Hamilton/Bean/Fox, especially next season. I don't care about the pairings, that's Brindy's job, but Bean and Fox gonna be cheap in next few seasons. No matter how good they are, you can't put them in top 4 role. They need time to develop in the best league. This is why they gonna start at third pair. You don't trade Slavin/Pesce/Hamilton/CDH because those kids are talented. They are not ready for +20 minutes every night in the NHL. So, what's your plan for Bean/Fox, Kev?

Do you not recall your own argument of not spending 50% of the budget on it? That's what I responded to when mentioning the ELCs. Perhaps read your own poor argument again for that part before being an ass.

Also, you've mentioned before nobody should be worried about our budget, but only the cap, but here suddenly it matters. Which is it?
