Is this move because he's not getting enough time in net for Michigan? Anyone know the story?

My understanding was that he was originally in something of a 3-way battle for playing time his freshman year. This past year he shit the bed pretty hard, only playing in 11 games (22 total in his college career). Essentially this is a restart with the hopes of getting lots of playing time and restarting his career.

Prettymuch. He was solid as a Freshman though didn't get a ton of playing time, but this past year was a train wreck for him combined with it being very obvious that Michigan was sticking with Lavigne going forward. So he goes the BCHL route for a year for a reboot on things. Generally not the best sign though.

Do we have any goalies with ties to the Hurricanes (besides Ward/Darling) that are at least playing above average in their respective league/college?

2019-2020 season being the season after this upcoming season. in case there was any confusion on that point.
Yep, case I'm referencing is a guy that played as a freshman for WVU's football team as a WR, transferred to a JuCo for a year, and then transferred right back to WVU last year ending up as a finalist for the nations top WR award.

With goalies our system of throwing lower round darts at the board is probably sound though. Eventually we'll get one, and no one has any idea how to draft a goalie.

It does seem like Washington is on to something though.

Varly, Neuvirth, Holtby, Grubauer, now Samsonov have come through their system in the last ~10 years. They’re doing something right, even if it’s just tremendous luck in that time. It might be a development thing.

Or a goalie scout/talent recognition thing...

Makiniemi has had a nice season. So there's that.

Was it really that good? I don’t know too much about him and it’s hard to find info on him but I see he wasn’t top ten statistically in his jr league. He also was outplayed by their other goalie who then went on loan giving Makiniemi more games than he probably would have got otherwise.

My annual review of Carolina's OHL prospects.

OHL Prospects: 31 Teams in 31 Days - Carolina Hurricanes

Happy to answer any additional questions.
Thanks for the information Brock.

Regarding Helvig, based on following Kingston some on the internet he seemed like a workhorse. I know he played back-to-back several times. One he even played Thursday night, Saturday night, and Sunday afternoon. Is that typical for OHL goalies? Does Hevig's style remind you of any NHL goalies? Thanks

100% a workhorse. Definitely above average for OHL netminders. Just like in any league, it all comes down to the quality of the back-up and Kingston just didn't have much faith in either of the two back-ups they employed this year. As a team with 1st place aspirations, every win mattered and that meant a lot of busy weekends for Helvig. He was 3rd in minutes played behind Evan Cormier and Anthony Popovich, two goalies relied upon even more heavily.

As for a comparison. Always tough to compare goaltenders because their games are still evolving at this point. But probably projects as a Robin Lehner type. Fills a ton of the net with his size. They are built similarly. Key will just be to continue to improve his quickness. Definitely relies on positioning and does a good job swallowing up rebounds to limit second chances.
