Way too early to tell, but I had plenty of negative things to say about them 2 weeks ago that might look foolish in another 2 weeks.

I'm going to say no. Team salary is too low. Team is/was playing behind their skill level. Goals will dry up.

That’s not very specific. If I simply reply that Carolina is better in every grouping overall, we’re at a standstill.

What specifically makes Columbus that much better of a team?
Goaltending.

Also, I'd say Jones and Werenski are better than Carolina's top two Dmen.

At forward, I'd say it is similar, although with Svech I give the edge to Carolina.

Goaltending for sure.

Jones/Werenski vs Slavin/Hamilton is pretty darn close in my book. If the former have an edge, it’s not much of one. Once you get past that first pairing, I’d say the Canes are substantially deeper in defense. Brett Pesce, on Carolina’s third pair, would play on Columbus’ second pair.

Forwards. Down the middle I’ll take Aho-Staal-Necas (Rask when healthy) over Dubois-Wennberg-Nash and it’s not particularly close. Columbus has the better LWs, especially with Panarin who is the best winger on either team. RW is a push for now, but Svechnikov is showing every sign of tilting it toward Carolina.

To me, the only substantial difference between the teams is goaltending. If someone wants to say Columbus is a much better team because they have a much better goalie, fine... but as a 19-man team I don’t see that at all. At least not on paper, in October. We’ll see how the two groups gel as the season carries on.

Apparently it's to early to discuss stuff like this. I don't even know why people talk on this site until the appropriate amount of games has been played.

In all seriousness they are pretty fast team. Like New Jersey last year they are going to take advantage of that against a lot of teams this year.

Sebastian Aho is better than every forward on the blue jackets

Jaccob Slavin is better than every defenseman on the blue jackets

stop kidding yourself
Why throw your credibility out the window when you claim Slavin to be better then Seth Jones or Aho to be better then Artemi Panarin based on a 5 game sample size.

Aho is a more well-rounded player than Panarin. Better two-way game too. Panarin is flashier and has had better offensive game. I`d say its a draw at this point, depending on team needs.
Seth Jones >> Slavin. And its not close...

it'll come down to goaltending again

I still can't believe they did so little to address it during the offseason, real "what were they thinking?" kinda thing there

How has de Haan looked?

He fits really well in the lineup, and has been an important part of the overall scheme of the defense. It’s not so much that he’s out there flat-out dominating play or anything, but he makes a bunch of little defensive checks that keep other guys’ mistakes from blowing up. CDH-Faulk on the second pair has a really similar dynamic to Slavin-Hamilton on the first pair, and that little bit of added depth allows the Canes to play a looser style than they have in the past (when it was Hanifin-Faulk and every shift was a gamble at both ends of the ice). He’s also been important on the PK.

I think that signing, which happened during the dog days of summer, got lost in the talk around the Hamilton trade and drafting Svechnikov and all the stuff about the goalies. But there has been a fair amount of positive chatter about him among the fans and beat reporters.

It’s funny, I remember circa 2014 thinking he must have busted and even a couple of years ago being surprised to see him in the lineup. You just never heard anything about him at all. Had no idea that he had grown into a legit top-4 guy. It makes me a little more inclined to be patient with Haydn Fleury, who’s a similar player and starting to get some flak for his development curve. But he’s still the age now that CDH was as a rookie, and we’d be stoked if he ended up as that level of player.

I mean Waddell tried to make a play for Grubauer during the off-season and Washington preferred to send him out of the division. At that point, what more could have been done without weakening the team in another area?

Can't downplay the fact that Bill Peters didn't do this team any good. The talent was there. Peters' system was garbage.

He's fine lol. Good to see the canes go on a run, but no team with 890 goaltending is going to make the playoffs in today's league.

Impressed by the Canes attack, reminds me of the Preds in transition, through the neutral zone. One of the quickest teams in the league.

How has de Haan looked?

I love him on the team, he’s quiet, but at the end of the night ends up a +5. He only has noticeable good plays, and haven’t seen anything of him out of position or making a bad play.
