Just hours after reportedly dealing UFA-to-be Tom Poti, the Carolina Hurricanes have brought in another impending unrestricted free agent defenseman according to rumours coming from HFNHL league offices.

According to an unnamed source familiar with the trade talks, the Hurricanes have shipped prospect and former first round draft choice AJ Thelen to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for defenseman Kim Johnsson and future considerations.

Johnsson was told by Sharks management earlier this month he wouldn't be resigned by the club despite having a strong season, scoring seven goals and 44 points in 80 games and having a -6 rating.

In the event the Hurricanes can't resign Johnsson and he goes to free agency, San Jose will send Carolina a third round draft choice in 2008.

Thelen's departure comes on the same day the Hurricanes reportedly added another prospect in Kyle Okposo from the Atlanta Thrashers. Interestingly, Thelen was drafted eighth overall in 2004, the same pick used on Okposo in the 2006 draft.

In 53 Western hockey league games split between the Prince Albert Raiders and the eventual Memorial Cup champion Vancouver Giants, Thelen scored eight goals and 21 points.
