Re: OP’s question, on how Dubas will keep Kadri happy, it’s a non-issue.
Presumably the tone was intended as “Kadri will be getting 3rd line C minutes so how will he stay happy getting less usage?”
See, anyone who is wondering this has not been paying attention.
Leo Komarov:
Last season uncle Leo was a lightning rod for criticism because Babcock was giving him 20+ mins a night and Matthews was not getting the same treatment.
Why?
Because Babcock believes in roles. Skill players are there to score goals. Then you have your defensive specialists that are there to shut down the opposition and hold the lead.
Last season, because we had such a high-powered offensive group, we had the lead a lot, usually quite early on. That meant a decrease in minutes for Matthews, Nylander, Bozak, and JVR, and increased minutes for the Kadri line and 4th line.
This year, we won’t have a 4th line C that Babcock is particularly familiar with. But Kadri has proven to be very reliable.
So undoubtedly rolling out Tavares and Matthews’ lines will result in some quick scoring, so many games will quickly turn over to Kadri and the 4th line (if they prove to be defensively reliable).
The key here is that Matthews and Tavares are both very defensively responsible, so they won’t be stuck on the shelf, but Babcock will want to protect his star players from unnecessary wear-and-tear.
Partly at the recommendation of the sports science team, as that factors in as well.
All told, the real “concern” should be Matthews and Tavares not getting 20+ mins a night like people probably expect.
