Now I want him to score 301 just to prove you wrong. I'd be too busy putting on my brown pants to even be mad...

Reporter: Auston what a incredible season and a legendary feat. You’re the first player to ever break 300 points. Can you tell us what was different this season? What caused you to explode this year?

Matthews: I needed to prove somebody wrong on the internet.

Man, I know we joke about it... but with the nhlers playing fortnite (junk game) and other stuff these days, it's not unreasonable to assume some of them lurk on this site. Or that some future ones will... haha

Totally depends if he plays with Marner. If he does he could break 90 if not he stays in 60 - 80 range.
I see 60 being low for Matthews. His first year he had 69 points. Second year he had 63 points in 62 games.
This was with Marner & Matthews playing on separate lines for the majority of the time

I think he’s gonna consistently fall in the 70-90 points range. Maybe a couple of seasons at 100

I’d say 90 points if he stays healthy and all goes well for him. Which would have put him in the top 10 last year. His goal scoring is elite but I’m not sure his playmaking will hit the level that sets the 100 point guys apart from the rest.

His playmaking most definitely can.

It’s very good and gets underrated on these boards for some reason.

I have this suspicion he will be one of those injury prone players who as a result never reach their full potential.

Have a feeling he won't hit 100 but 90 points should definitely be possible for Matthews. He's got amazing skills and a great supporting cast

Eh, it is possible that he scores pretty much any number you want to go for. What would happen if he got prime PP time, continued his ES excellence, and then put up the most unsustainable season in modern history?

Gotta narrow it down more than that.

he'll top out a ppg player with 40ish goals

Not as good as McDavid....shocking I know (it will actually come shocking to some)

It's weird that some people see PPG and 40 goals as a put down. Not too many centers in the league are doing that. Having two centers that are capable of doing that is going to create big problems for Leaf opponents. Maybe Matthews can score 50 goals if he stays healthy but I don't see him getting enough assists to be in the McDavid realm of 90 - 120.

Just way too many insecure leaf fans, the same ones bring up even strength all the time as if it's worth more to score 5vs5 than the pp

Marner will top out a 0.83 PPG player with 22ish goals.
Laine will top out a .84 PPG player with 44ish goals.

Marner was 1.11ppg with Kadri (52pts/47games)
Now he plays with Tavares

85-90 points. Peaks in the 95-100 point range. It really depends on matchups, if Tavares gets the tougher matchups, I could see him(Matthews) being a consistent 50/40 player. If Matthews gets the tougher matchups, you can take 5-10 points away. It's really going to be a nightmare for the opposition coach, similar to trying to matchup with the Pens. Pick your poison.

I was responding to two posters - both who hate Matthews - who think that claiming a that a 20-year old will top out below where he is now is not an insult.

(and no, Marner did not get 52 pts in 47 games with Kadri)

Huh? it is worth more. Maybe not on the scoreboard but it's a lot tougher to score at even strength. It says something when the majority of stars make their living on the PP alone. A guy who scores at even strength holds more value than a guy who gets most of his points on the PP. Is that even debatable?

19: 40g/69pts in 82 games
20: 34g/63pts in 62 games (44g/83pt pace)
Total: 74g/132pts in 144 games

I think 45g/85-90pts year in year out is reasonable. There are only a few guys that have been as dominant in the NHL at 19-20 (Sid,OV,Mcdavid,Stamkos,Malkin etc). 100pts is possible

Look at the scoring leaders now at the same stage of their career. Matthews is miles ahead

2: Giroux - 27pts in 44 games
3: Kucherov - 18pts in 52 games
5: Mackinnon - 101pts in 146 games
6: Hall - 95pts in 126 games
7. Kopitar - 61pts in 72 games
8: Kessel - 66pts in 152 games
9: Wheeler - was still years away

1 is mcdavid, 4 is malkin, 10 is crosby....
