TB hit some homeruns (Stralman, Boyle), a surprising bloop single (Morrow -- he's been good), and we're waiting on the Ump's call on a 2-strike check swing (Nabokov).

Oh, and we got rid of Teddy Purcell, thus removing the chains from whatever line he would have played on this year (Grand Slam).

As a Leafs fan, not sure where to start... The team has practically an entirely new top-6. Komarov, Winnik, Santorelli have all been terrific pick-ups for the team and are all pretty cheap. All 3 of them give the Leafs reliable two-way play, penalty killing and good depth offense, and you know they come to play every night. Panik is from the waiver wire and has been great for the Leafs too, very skilled for a guy in his role and he could come in handy if the Leafs lose a couple wingers to injury.

Polak has been pretty solid, although I'm still not sold on that trade.

Robidas has been okay, the Leafs needed a defensemen like him and he seems like a good presence in the locker room, he has done his job but hasn't exceeded expectations the way the other free agent signings have.

Jury is still out on Booth because he really hasn't played much yet, in terms of GP or TOI.

we paid $14mil+ for 2 defensemen and we're marginally better in the standings compared to last year. Neither good nor bad. Expecting more from Niskanen. At least we have depth back there though.

Very happy with both Niskanen and Orpik. Niskanen is good at everything and plays in all situations. Yes, Orpik is overpaid but he's been really solid for us - and he's absolutely dreamy in the shootout.

OTOH Justin Peters is horrible and should catch the mumps.

The Sharks' prized acquisition of John Scott is currently having a career year in San Jose. That's all you need to know.

Montreal
For the Montreal Canadiens:

Jiri Sekac: The 22-year-old was the ultimate free-agent, skipping from the KHL to the NHL, where his under-the-radar development into a top-six winger caught the attention of a dozen teams. Luckily for the Habs he decided to come to Montreal, becoming a puck-possession beast with speed, smarts and skill.

P.A. Parenteau: Montreal traded away one dollar and got back one-fifty. The swap for Danny Briere was a net gain for Montreal, but Parenteau remains a borderline top-six winger, swinging from scoring threat to non-entity depending on his linemates and the weather.

Manny Malhotra: Known by his X-Men friends as "Faceoff", Manny's mutant super-power remains strong. However, the moment after winning the draw he reverts back into his true form as a mild-mannered baby seal, able to slide quickly along the ice but generating no force. No offence, Manny, but no offence.

Sergei Gonchar: Gonchar has flashbacks to the offensive skill and savvy he learned while playing with Doug Harvey. It's impressive and he's been pretty good. I'm just hoping an opposition player doesn't tell him he's 87 years old and scooting around on a walker with skate blades.

Tom Gilbert: As advertised. Gilbert's a solid PMD with the value-added skill of becoming Habs fans' whipping boy. Yes, he's made some bad turnovers, however his ratio of good to bad plays is better than the complaints would suggest.

Have been nothing less than impressed with all the Penguins new guys, except Spaling. Jury's still out on him

Players acquired through trade since the draft, free agent signings, trades this year etc.

So anyone willing to discuss. :)

Effective, in a word.

Santorelli is good grinding winger
Komarov is a great team first guy who the opposition hates. He hits everything that moves.
Winnick is a PK beast who can slide up into the second line without hurting the club.
Panik has been really dynamic, mixing it up and going to the dirty areas to fight for loose pucks.

Good work by the Leafs' front office.

Neal. A-
Streaky but can't deny the talent he brings to our top line

Ribs. A+
Absolute steal on the ice. Really seems to have embraced the "new life" in Nashville.

Volchenkov B

Guy has played solid. Gives us a good physical presence that can kill penalties and stay at home. Can't really argue with this signing.

The not as good. ..

Olli and Roy. Neither guy can finish anymore. Both have given us something in our own zone at times with Olli leading that category. Roy has at times been in the right place, making the right play and consequently has gotten some assists. We really need both of these guys to step it up for secondary scoring as Forsberg and the top unit are drawing more attention as the season progresses.

Thomas Vanek looks like he is at the end of a very long shift all shift long.

Orpik and Niskanen have been everything they were advertised as. All the Orpik has been a flame out. Were his contract not so long it would be fine. So far this season he is worth his check.

Benoit Pouliot - Really solid. Showed some chemistry with RNH and looked great on the 1st line before his injury.

Mark Fayne - Quality defender. Extremely consistent. Should be getting more icetime.

Teddy Purcell - Mostly invisible with some flashes of quality play.

Nikita Nikitin - Possibly the worst player to ever wear an Oilers jersey.

P. Bellemare: Solid bottom 6 player.

MDZ: Had a good start to the season, now he's been a healthy scratch, go figure.

Rj Umberger:  (about sums it up)

Nick Schultz: Surprisingly pretty consistent.

I agree, except I'd flip Nikitin and Purcell . Purcell is absolutely atrocious. He's quite possibly the laziest player in the NHL. Nikitin is a #7 most nights, but randomly decides to play like a top 4 dman sometimes

I wonder if Stralman and Boyle's play in TB will give the Rangers' team last year some credit from the main boards, considering we were a garbage team supposedly.
