Can you explain breaking up Nylander and Matthews?

Or will you just say Babcock is smarter than you so you don’t even think about it?

When it comes to hockey Babcock is smarter than me.

3 goals in 30 games will get you booted off the top line every time, not saying all 30 games was played with Matthews but when he did play with Austin that line has been very ineffective. Some people have suggested that Matthews didn't want Hyman and Nylander as linemates, not that is a good reason but the rumor is out there.

Willie has been much better since the ASG, 5 points in 9 games, might be time to try him again. I'm sure with 20-ish games remaining Willie will get more than one shot at playing with Austin again.

I'm guessing he wants to spread his scoring across 3 lines. I think 3 good scoring lines is a dangerous think come playoff time.

It doesn’t really work like that though.

The last two years we tried to spread the offense and got spanked by teamsnwith one superstar line and less depth scoring than we had.

Feels like Babcock is trying to outsmart the other coaches instead of doing what they’re doing and playing the best players together. In reality he might be outsmarting himself.

That’s fair enough. I think we will see it again soon. I just wish he gave Willy more of a rope with Matthews this year.

.... except if you're Zach Hyman.

Then the 1 line Bruins got beat out in 5 by the more balanced Lightning.
Exactly. The argument goes far beyond being a "1-line team" or a "balanced team".

It's about chemistry 100%.

Agreed. Chemistry, amount of experience, etc(intangibles) are huge factors.

How'd it work out last playoffs?

Our 3-line offense got outdone by a 1-line offense.

It was that simple eh? That singular in your mind? We lost so spreading out the talent is bad.

There is no factoring in the influence of the poor special teams or the meltdown of Jake in Game 7 or Andy having a bad series or Matthews and Nylander scoring only 1 goal a piece while being scored on frequently or Naz being suspended for 3 games or our D not scoring a single goal. None of this factors into your thought process?

It's as simple for you as reducing it down to an illogical singular equivalency?

Except, its not the same thing at all eh? Hyman's job is to do the grunt work, it's Nylanders job to do the scoring. If Hyman all of a sudden gets it in his mind he is a goal scorer (like Domi did) and he stops doing the grunt work, he will quickly find himself in the press box or on another team. When you don't do what you are there to do, someone else is happy to take your role.

From twitter

Babcock is the jockey who races a prized stallion, pulls on the reigns from start to finish but still finishes top 3 and gets a bouquet of roses at the end for a valiant effort.

He is ahead of 24 other coaches so he can't be doing all that bad. The idea that you load line is so ancient you should be back in the 80's. There is a reason why some coaches do it like in Colorado and Edmonton....

...and like Tampa and Boston and Washington....

Last year's round 1

ES + PP TOI

Matthews 17:23 --- Bergeron 18:17* (+5.2%)
Marner 16:58 ------ Pastrnak 19:04 (+12.4%)
Nylander 15:24 ---- Marchand 18:43 (+21.5%)
Kadri 14:44 -------- Krejci 17:39 (+19.7%)
JVR 14:20 --------- Nash 15:58 (+11.4%)
Johnsson 10:54 ---- Debrusk 14:45 (+35.3%)
Kappy 9:39 -------- Heinen 12:35 (+30.6%)

Marleau 16:05 ----- Backes 14:40 (-8.8%)
Bozak 14:34 ------- Nash 13:21 (-8.3%)
Hyman 14:14 ------ Acciari 11:34 (-18.8%)
Brown 13:43 ------- Kuraly 10:18 (-24.9%)
Pleks 12:41 -------- Schaller 9:36 (-24.4%)

They played their skill players much more than our skill players at even strength and on the pp, and played their replaceable grunts much less than ours.

And they still barely beat us.

But why are we conceding the skill advantage to the other team every single time?

Meh, I like having Nylander with Kadri and Jonsson on the 3rd line. Makes us a more dangerous team TBH. If you can run out 3 scoring lines in the playoffs, that beats alot of teams depthwise.

so flip Moore and Nylander in my lineup then.

I don't know why but for whatever reason appealing to authority is only OK with Babcock. You know, armchair coach has no business telling NHL coach what to do blah blah blah

But when when we're demanding Dubas to get more toughness/grit, apparently you can tell an NHL GM how an NHL team needs to be built.

These people are severely confused and have no understanding of basic logic.

yep, DUBAS SUCKS ITS SO OBVIOUS HE"S AN IDIOT but..... DON"T YOU DARE THINK YOU ARE SMARTER THAN BABCOCK!!!

Yep. some teams are just better or have players like Halak that are playing out of their mind good right now. We don't have players playing on the same level as Kucherov or Halak or.... so until we do 7th ain't all that bad.

Leafs need to get to the 2nd round or Babcock is going to start facing some questions.

I think if we went out 4 straight vs the Lightning in round 2 I would still have some questions.

But what about Boston and Tampa and Washington - you know, the teams that beat us/are ahead of us - all stacking their skill together on the top lines?

why can't we try that, just to see what happens?

There is a difference between disagreeing with his coaching philosophy and line combinations, and having people say Babcock is stupid and should be fired. That's just beyond ridiculous.

I don't think Babcock is stupid. I do think he's maybe not as smart as he thinks he is, because he seems to think he's much smarter than every other coach in the league.

who's job is it on tampa's top 2 lines to "do the grunt work"?
