I have noticed for a little while now, with so many media members with 4 newspapers, two radio stations, social media, and all the others from TV covering the Canucks, the quality of coverage has gone downhill.
The best discussion and insight I get is from others who post here, or from the occasional beat writer or columnist, or from hockey insiders who cover all, or other teams. But the average Vancouver sports media personality so far are just not insightful...
Case in point...
Over the last couple days, the two biggest stars in Canuck history (arguably) held press conferences. Here are most of the questions thrown at them:
ROBERTO LUONGO (Post Trade Deadline)
STARTED WITH OBVIOUS QUESTIONS...
Are you relieved this is over?
Did you think today that something happened?
Are you dissapointed?
What kept you from being traded? Length of contract, term (both are the same thing)?
Have you thought about how difficult is to move your contract? (Roberto's answer: well..yeah, I'VE HAD A YEAR TO THINK ABOUT IT)
THEN A HYPOTHETICAL:
Could you move yourself if you were a GM?
THEN ANOTHER...
What if you had to do this again next year?
Are people going to see the same side of you, through social media and your personality, does today change that?
If you were writing a story in the paper, how would you approach it?
Is it frustrating to know that you could be elsewhere?
Then Bure returned for the first time:
PAVEL BURE...
What are your top 3 memories as a Canuck? (Pavel: I don't just have 3)
THEN 4 QUESTIONS ON THE SAME TOPIC AFTER HE ADDRESSED IT WITH THE PREVIOUS ANSWER...
Are you going to retire your jersey?
What will it mean to have your jerey retired?
Is it going to happen?
Should you have been honoured with your jersey retired before...is it the same as the Hall of Fame?
THEN CRAP ABOUT HIS PERSONAL LIFE THAT ANYONE WITH A GOOGLE SEARCH COULD HAVE LEARNED IN 2 SECONDS...OR THAT ARE NONE OF OUR BUSINESS AND NO ONE CARES ABOUT...
Where do you live mostly?
Are you having a baby soon?
Is it going to be a boy or a girl?
Do you have a name picked out?
(Is this TMZ?)
These press conferences, especially the Bure one, were a joke in terms of the quality questions, and I think the Vancouver media just seem to like the access they get, and ask stupid questions just to get some soundbites and move on.
Especially the Bure one. The questions about his personal life just reminded him of one of the reasons he probably wanted out of here...our dumb media and their focus on the unimportant.
