On the penalty kill, Anaheim have been better than Detroit overall, with a 75% success rate to Detroit’s 66.7%. This is despite the Ducks allowing 62.3 shots per 60 minutes at 4v5, and possessing a very poor short-handed save percentage of 82.6%. However, Detroit are even worse – last in the NHL in fact – with a 68.8% save percentage short-handed. The old saying that your best penalty killer has to be your goalie couldn’t be more true here, and Jimmy Howard has to improve on that abysmal statistic if he wants to help his team, particularly with his team only allowing 42.4 shots per 60 minutes at 4v5. That’s still a bad number, 14th out of 16 playoff teams, but it’s better than Anaheim. The simple fact is that Jonas Hiller has been miles better than Jimmy Howard in this discipline.
