One of the better phrases that I have read here lately.
In reality if you look at all those massive contracts, then many of them have been bad. Some have been okay, some simply horrible and a few of them great.
Nowadays, the essential part is developing your own talent. Because signing free-agents is expensive and there are very few of them. Wings have been great in the past ten years or so because they developed Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Kronner, Fil and Franzen. All of them have been important players. Now Wings are worse because Kindl, Emmerton, Axelsson, etc have not panned out. So they have a missing generation so to speak.
To me, I don't see anyway we part with Flip unless Flip prices himself out of Detroit. Howard might be a different story.
But I'm 75 percent sure they'll both resign. Which leaves very little money for anything else, other than resigning or replacing White and maybe resigning Smith for a few years.
What do I think? I think we are in a bad spot, but it's doable.
I think Holland has do to everything he can to keep these guys, even if that means getting rid of Franzen. Yes, I think Fil is more valuable to the team than Franzen is at this point.
We have Cleary as well, that I would trade for a pick or maybe some depth. Bring up a young gun. Maybe Tartar? I think he's about ready (after this season).
The only thing that boggles me is what would you get for Franzen? Would you want to rip yourself off to drop your cap? Picks? Or just a lazy combo deal.
I just hope Holland does what he can to keep these guys...But I have a feeling one will end up going, and it's not the goalie.
EDIT: Never really thought...Franzen have a NTC?

I don't think either player will price themselves out of Detroit (just to get to the$59m figure, each would have to command $5m - which I think is a slight stretch) and that should be plenty of money to re-sign Smith and Gus. Lack of cap room would then force Holland to quit bringing in mediocre vets, or possibly trim one or two more off the roster.

With a $64.3m cap we'll have close to 20m in space before amnestying anyone (cutting Bert and Sammy gives us another $5m), but we have a lot of FAs.

Fil, Howard, Cleary, White, Brunner and Miller are UFAs.
All the RFAs will probably be kept. Cleary and Miller are gone. White and Brunner are toss ups. And I can't see Holland letting Jimmy and Fil leave unless their asking prices are just outrageous.

Eh, since the cap was implemented it is obvious what Detroit does: draft and development to build out your core and then try to fill gaps via free agency. Free agency as we saw this summer is a bit of a crap shoot. If he whiffs on Edler this summer then I think Holland may be forced to go the trade route which he tends to avoid but has done it when necessary (Stuart, Bert).
free agency has always and will always be a crap shoot
good teams draft and develop well first and foremost,
make a few smart/brillant trades that do several things
-move out bad or unwanted contracts
-fill an organizational need
-free up roster space and playing time for its kids
-gain additional cheap young players and/or picks
and then and only then add an important/missing piece via free agency, ex faceoff speacialist, 3rd line centre, punishing stay-at-home dman
Ugh, at times I hate the separate lines for salary and cap payrolls on capgeek. I was looking at actual salary. Yeah, we'll afford everyone we want to keep pretty easily.
With that much room, I don't think Cleary is a definite "gone," though.
Unfortunately, what it leaves room for, perhaps, is another $3M a year retread
Wings need to be careful because if Pavel decides he wants to stay in 15 months... you better have room to sign him.

Can teams like the Leafs/Rangers/Hawks still bury contracts in the AHL or Europe in this CBA to get cap relief?
I think I read that any salary greater than $900,000 on a 1-way contract in the AHL will count against the salary cap.

Exactly. The problem is they had a gap in which our best NHL-ready young guys were Emmerton and Mursak...

New "buying and selling cap space" -rule will be pretty interesting. That should activate the trade market drastically. At earlier cap seasons, the biggest problem for trades was a team that wanted to trade for a player, would have been forced to send some salary back. And the selling team didn't want it. So the those too restrictive rules killed many promising trade ideas. Now, when you can sell the cap with max 50% of the value of that guy, it makes things a lot easier to happen.

Other than Fedorov, the Wings aren't known to "lose" players to free-agency. They'll lock him up, like it or not.
