On the GM side

Ken Holland was recently hired for five years at ~$5m/year in Edmonton.

Brendan Shanahan recently announced six year extension for Toronto GM. Haven't seen $$.

I get what you're suggesting here, but it's actually really easy to make an argument that your bottom line is suffering because of a payroll arms race.

Paywall. A look at how coaches negotiate their deals. About 50% of coaches have an agent. The NHLPA prohibits player agents from representing coaches due to potential conflict of interest (since mid 1990s).

Negotiations include salary, healthcare and other benefits. And exit strategy (how long doesn't health care continue, etc.). How are assistants handled in wake of HC leaving?

A few guys are making a name for themselves as coaches' agents. But not a lot of fanfare.

Average salaries for head coaches in the NHL range from $1 million to $6 million annually. Veteran associate coaches, often those who have had some head coaching experience, range between $500,000 and $700,000. And younger assistants pull in between $200,000 and $400,000 annually. So the challenge for coaches is to find someone to navigate those sometimes unfamiliar financial waters.

One reason to have an agent is to leave the business negotiations out of GM-coach relationship, just concentrate on the hockey.
