It's not particularly a hockey bar but Blake Street Tavern is a really good sports bar that's downtown.

I guess this would be the thread for me to ask... The girlfriend and I are considering visiting Denver in the summer. Any suggestions on neighborhoods to stay? Or -- you know -- to stay away from?

you don't need to worry much about bad neighborhoods. It'll be cheaper and easier to get a hotel in Aurora or the Tech Center and take the metro into town. But really there's not much to do in Denver, or rather not much that you couldn't get at any other big city. Better to spend your time in the mountains if you can

I've seen this said by so many people before but I have to ask. What exactly does this mean?

What exactly do you do "in the mountains" ?? Is it just for the scenery? The skiing?

Scenery, skiing, we have really good hiking spots, mountain biking, stuff like that. We have all the typical stuff you can do in any big city, but the best part of Colorado is that all the fun outdoors stuff you can do is only an hour or two away from Denver depending on where you are.

That sounds like what I want to do on my vacation, stay in Aurora and ride a 45 minute bus into downtown.

Stay downtown, 16th street area, Highlands if you like hipster stuff. Colfax and north of Coors Firld probably not your best bets.

That makes sense. I guess everyone is different and those things sound appealing if you live in a place like Denver and gives you options when you're sick of the regular day to day.

For me on a vacation though I sure as hell am not climbing, hiking or riding a bike anywhere. I want people to bring me drinks and food while I relax. I'm fine with walking around downtown in cities going in and out of pubs, stores and attractions like that. When it comes to skiing or biking though, I can do that at home (I don't lol).

It's what makes Colorado special, basically. Think of anything you can do outdoors, golf, shopping, zip line, biking, hiking, swimming, gondola rides, alpine slide, rafting, boating, camping, outdoor concerts, rodoes, etc, etc. There's so many different towns for different things you'd want to do. Little hipster ski towns, upscale ski resorts, hot springs towns are another big thing, typical mountain towns, big, small you name it. There's even casino towns. The scale and scenery is tough to describe until you've been there but there's a spot for everyone. I'm not super outdoorsy but I like the mountain towns, hot springs, just getting away.

I like downtown a lot myself and if you are coming into town for that then just stay right in the heart of it and do downtown things. If you are going to get out then go a good hour into the mountains and have that experience.

As a not so "outdoorsy" person, you made me think very beautiful thoughts with those descriptions lol. Maybe my next trip to Colorado will include a lot more of those things (minus the physical exercise lol).

Like I said, I'm not "outdoorsy" either but when you can eat and drink in a setting like this then it's a bit more special than just being downtown somewhere. And that's Aspen, one of the foodie capitals, so it's not some run down place with a few rustic bars. They've got the whole variety.

Really the outdoors is what really makes Colorado special. Denver is a nice city and it is pretty clean and crime free for one of its size, but if you want to experience a big city... there are far better ones to experience. The mountains and all that comes with them (from outdoor activities to eating at high end Aspen restaurants to mountain town brewery in a place like Basalt... seriously when Capitol Creek gets going...) are what makes the area really awesome.

Kento... if you come out in the summer and bring your Jeep (or rent one) the Alpine Loop is one of the best dirt road drives in the country.

Pretty much! Like has been said before you can do all the typical city stuff in Denver and it's cool, but all the stuff in the mountains is so beautiful and unique that anyone who visits needs to go somewhere in the mountains. Plus Kento you can go to the mountains and still find a resort where people will bring you food and drinks :naughty:

Along with the mountains here's the things/events that I'd come to Denver for (or at least plan around)

Red Rocks - World Class amphitheater. This is a must - you can almost watch anything there at night and just be in awe....(unless it's raining - it's an outdoor venue). Plenty of musicians from all over the world will tell you that Red Rocks is their favorite venue to play in. It's legendary in the music world.

GABF - The Great American Beer Festival. Tough to get tickets but if you love beer it's a crazy experience. Probably the best beer festival in the US and other cities are now trying to emulate the original.

Broncos Home Games - I'd put that experience up there. Denver's a football town before any other sport and the atmosphere at Sports Authority rates as one of the best in the NFL.

Rocky Mountain National Park - A healthy drive away from downtown Denver but really the essence of the outdoors here. You can always find lots of trails etc outside of the Park though as well.

DENVER!!!!!!!
Thanks everyone, I appreciate the input. We'd most likely stay in the city to do city things. Then, maybe a day or two, we'd do the nature stuff.

If you are doing Denver, at least stay in the city. Check out the Crawford Hotel for a pretty unique experience.

Also, I've mentioned it before, but we really need to sticky the "Coming to Denver" It would be nice to always have it around.

I was in Denver for the Stadium Series and the outdoors stuff was definitely the highlight.

We went to Red Rocks amphitheater and there's a nice half hour hike through the rocks there that was great. Saw lots of wildlife.

One day was spent skiing at Loveland and it was amazing. There may be better ski hills but I've never been skiing somewhere with views like that. You can go up to the top of the ridge at over 13,000 ft and see everything. I'm used to my local hill that has a top elevation of 1250ft and takes less than 5 minutes to ski down

And I also had a guided mountain bike tour booked but the mountains got dumped with snow the weekend before. So we ended up going showshoing instead up near the Coors town. (Golden?) This was kinda meh because we were in the trees basically the whole time and it was half snow/half mud.

I'm definitely going back to do some biking at some point.
