Highest scoring duos in NHL history

There was a thread not too long ago here discussing primary assists vs secondary. Someone had complained that Gretzky had more 2ndary assists than anyone else in history, which shouldn't be shocking considering he also has more primary assists than anyone else in history. That's what happens when you have more assists than anyone else has points. However, the breakdown also showed that Gretzky had the highest % of primary assists of anyone in history as well, something I found rather surprising. I'm sure there was a cut off - like min 300 assists or something so we didn't have some random clown who played like 3 games ever and had 1 assist total as the leader.

Yep, it's this thread: http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=821020

No mention of Lemieux/Stevens in the thread? I see they'd be omitted from the results just as Hull/Oates were, but thought someone would mention.

Lemieux: 69 goals
Stevens: 55 goals
Tocchet: 48 goals

It's possible Lemieux/Stevens and Lemieux/Tocchet would both crack the list for that year. Heck, even Lemieux/Francis or Lemieux/Jagr, potentially.

For '84-'85 and '85-'86 I'd guess you could probably find permutations of Gretzky/Coffey, Kurri/Coffey and Gretzky/Anderson that would hit this list as well. Same go for some of the other tandems listed.

I think such analysis would diminish how remarkable the accomplishment of the Sedins appears, but there's no doubt they deserve credit in this category.

They are included in the ranking, only Gretzky - Coffey made the top-30. Anderson played primarily with Messier and not Gretzky.

the sedins will be #1 on the duo list by the time theyre done, but of course they will play entire career together, unlike the other duos.

Where are Lemieux and Jagr on this list?

Their 1995-96, 1996-97 and 2000-01 seasons have to be up there.

Matnor do you have the games played together as well? Might be interesting to see that along with the goals/points

Particularly for duos that played before the somewhat standard 80ish game season we've had for the last few decades

Nice summaries. One of my greatest regrets was that I never saw Trottier and Bossy together even if I had a few chances. Youth is not the only thing wasted on the young it seems.

As for Gretzky and Kurri whom I saw a lot you are really looking at the wrong statistics. This duo was of course almost unstoppable in the regular season but the post season - oh baby.

Where are Lemieux and Jagr on this list?

Their 1995-96, 1996-97 and 2000-01 seasons have to be up there.

Rank | Duo | Season | Goals
16375 | Jaromir Jagr - Mario Lemieux | 90/91 | 7
6389 | Jaromir Jagr - Mario Lemieux | 93/94 | 13
158 | Jaromir Jagr - Mario Lemieux | 95/96 | 48
120 | Jaromir Jagr - Mario Lemieux | 96/97 | 51
106 | Jaromir Jagr - Mario Lemieux | 00/01 | 53
----- | ---------------------------- | ------------ | ---
91 | Jaromir Jagr - Mario Lemieux | 90/91 - 00/01 | 172

Basically, they played together at even strength in 96/97 and 00/01 but very little otherwise. For instance, in 95/96 when Jagr had 149 points and Lemieux 161 they only had 12 ES points together (plus minus a couple of points due to incomplete data).

It would be interesting but unfortunately I don't have that data.

How about Kariya/Selanne?

Rank | Duo | Season | Goals
3894 | Paul Kariya - Teemu Selanne | 95/96 | 17
46 | Paul Kariya - Teemu Selanne | 96/97 | 59
3068 | Paul Kariya - Teemu Selanne | 97/98 | 19
61 | Paul Kariya - Teemu Selanne | 98/99 | 57
120 | Paul Kariya - Teemu Selanne | 99/00 | 51
1337 | Paul Kariya - Teemu Selanne | 00/01 | 27
25043 | Paul Kariya - Teemu Selanne | 03/04 | 5
----- | ---------------------------- | ------------| ---
35 | Paul Kariya - Teemu Selanne | 95/96 - 03/04 | 235

It should be noted that data from the mid-90s is so-so. Particularly for Selänne's 95/96 season which only contain 96 out of Selänne's actual 108 points.

Very interesting list and work.

Can you discriminate for goal and primary assists?
Let's say compare how many goals Kurri scored with a Gretzky primary assist, a Gretzky secondary assist and total?

In theory I could do that but it would require some work and I don't have that data readily available. But as has been said before, Gretzky has the highest share of primary assists for the years there are data which might tell you something.

yup. tells me that he was an incredible passer, eyes behind his head, created offense from nothing, made previously mediocre players dangerous when they were on the ice at the same time.

There ARE statistics that CLEARLY reflect what the eyes see. This might be one of them.

Games played together seems nearly irrelevant as this is so extremely related to who's on the ice at the same time. What's really interesting is time on ice together, which obviously is impossible to compile for such a large period of time.

Hull & Oates should not be omitted, though. In 1990/1991, they scored 111 goals together (86+25), which would top the per year-ranking.

Gruß,
BSHH

It was really the only "full" (Oates with only 61 games) season they played together too.

In 89/90 Brett played almost exclusively with Peter Zezel, and in 91/92 Oates was traded away after 54 games.

I have a request: Is it possible to list stats for Lidstrom & Holmstrom, especially power play goals. They've been playing together for almost fifteen years now and still spend 10-20 minutes after every practice practicing shot-tipping and rebound-retrieving. That's a pretty unique situation in today's NHL.

Neither are as offensively gifted as the other duos listed in the thread, but it would be interesting to get an idea of how big a part this cooperation represents in their total production.

This is for all goals:

Rank | Duo | Season | Goals
88302 | Tomas Holmstrom - Nicklas Lidstrom | 96/97| 1
88302 | Tomas Holmstrom - Nicklas Lidstrom | 97/98| 1
16375 | Tomas Holmstrom - Nicklas Lidstrom | 98/99| 7
7352 | Tomas Holmstrom - Nicklas Lidstrom | 99/00 | 12
8498 | Tomas Holmstrom - Nicklas Lidstrom | 00/01 | 11
25043 | Tomas Holmstrom - Nicklas Lidstrom | 01/02 | 5
13621 | Tomas Holmstrom - Nicklas Lidstrom | 02/03 | 8
25043 | Tomas Holmstrom - Nicklas Lidstrom | 03/04 | 5
3068 | Tomas Holmstrom - Nicklas Lidstrom | 05/06 | 19
4393 | Tomas Holmstrom - Nicklas Lidstrom | 06/07 | 16
7352 | Tomas Holmstrom - Nicklas Lidstrom | 07/08 | 12
20045 | Tomas Holmstrom - Nicklas Lidstrom | 08/09| 6
8498 | Tomas Holmstrom - Nicklas Lidstrom | 09/10| 11
9865 | Tomas Holmstrom - Nicklas Lidstrom | 10/11| 10
----- | -----------------------------------| ------------| ---
186 | Tomas Holmstrom - Nicklas Lidstrom | 96/97 - 10/11 | 124

And this is only for PP goals:

Rank | Duo | Season | Goals
28678 | Tomas Holmstrom - Nicklas Lidstrom | 96/97 | 1
6624 | Tomas Holmstrom - Nicklas Lidstrom | 98/99 | 5
4983 | Tomas Holmstrom - Nicklas Lidstrom | 99/00 | 6
1735 | Tomas Holmstrom - Nicklas Lidstrom | 00/01 | 10
8863 | Tomas Holmstrom - Nicklas Lidstrom | 01/02 | 4
6624 | Tomas Holmstrom - Nicklas Lidstrom | 02/03 | 5
8863 | Tomas Holmstrom - Nicklas Lidstrom | 03/04 | 4
1029 | Tomas Holmstrom - Nicklas Lidstrom | 05/06 | 12
3790 | Tomas Holmstrom - Nicklas Lidstrom | 06/07 | 7
2901 | Tomas Holmstrom - Nicklas Lidstrom | 07/08 | 8
12240 | Tomas Holmstrom - Nicklas Lidstrom | 08/09 | 3
2901 | Tomas Holmstrom - Nicklas Lidstrom | 09/10 | 8
1735 | Tomas Holmstrom - Nicklas Lidstrom | 10/11 | 10
----- | -----------------------------------| ------------| ---
41 | Tomas Holmstrom - Nicklas Lidstrom | 96/97 - 10/11 | 83

So, they are 41st all time in PP goals together. Perhaps surprising is that they share that spot with Alfredsson and Redden. Also, Lidström has a higher amount of PP goals with Shanahan (104), Yzerman (93) and Datsyuk (90). Still a high number though.

And what about Peter Stastny - Michel Goulet in Quebec?

Here they are:

Rank | Duo |Season | Goals
