Gordie-Howe-Mr.-Hockey.jpg

This picture is apparently from Hockey Hall of Fame. All I can find about it is "Gordie Howe in a game against Toronto". Of course, I'd like to know more (like what season and what specific game), but where should I look? If I contact HHOF, will they tell me? :)

Nice touch! I didn't think to check goaltender numbers ending in "9". Indeed, Sawchuk is the only option.

And that leaves only one possibility:

January 26, 1969. Detroit - Toronto 3:2. That's the only 1968/69 game vs Toronto, where Sawchuk was in Detroit's goal.

Thank you all!

So basically three possibilities:

11/23/68: Toronto - Detroit 2:5
01/18/69: Toronto - Detroit 1:1
03/22/69: Toronto - Detroit 3:1

(There is also a 12/21/68 game in Toronto, but Detroit used both goalies there, and those were Roger Crozier and Roy Edwards, so we know Sawchuk wasn't even a backup).

Sawchuk only played in 13 games, so I wouldn't expect him to be even a backup than often, what with Edwards (40 games) and Crozier (35) probably backing each other up most of the time, but unfortunately NHL.COM box scores don't list backups...

Here is another photo from HHOF. The caption is "Ted Kennedy skates through Boston defenders"

I would like to know who numbers 7 and 6 (?) are.

With 7, there are two possibilities: Ed Sandford and Vic Stasiuk. The photo looks more like Sandford's.

With 6, there are actually three possibilities (given that Ted Kennedy was the Toronto captain since 1948 till 1957, but missed 1955/56): Vic Lynn, Gus Kyle and Warren Godfrey.

Anyone else agrees that number 7 on the photo in the previous post is Sandford (right), not Stasiuk (left)?

And with No 7 being Ed Sandford, the possible time range is 1948/49 - 1954/55.

Unfortunately, Hockey-Reference only lists sweater numbers starting from 1950/51, so we have no clue who was Boston's No 6 in 1948/49 - 1949/50.

In 1950/51, it was Vic Lynn.
In 1951/52, it was Vic Lynn and Gus Kyle at different points.
In 1952/53 - 1954/55, it was Warren Godfrey.

If it's not a warm-up, then there is no plausible version at all. No other Detroit goalie during Gordie Howe era had a number with "9" or "6" in it. So it's Sawchuk, and the season is 1968/69. But it's an away game, and Sawchuk did not play in any away games against Toronto, so he could only be a backup during the warm-up.

Unless, of course, the Hockey Hall of Fame is wrong about the game being against Toronto.

Looks like Toronto to me, the colouring on the boards, the nets. Pretty sure it is MLG.

Actually, nhl.com does list numbers.

In 1948/49 - 1949/50, No 6 in Boston was Jack Crawford.

How else would you explain a "9" on his sweater? Sawchuk is the only Detroit goalie of the Gordie Howe era to have a number that contained either "9" or "6".
