Hicketts has NHL-level hockey sense though. I see him as a total long-shot because of his size, but he at least has upside. De Haas is a nobody. His best-case scenario is as a replacement-level #6 defenseman.
De Haas is a 6'4" 210 lbs guy that skates well. He would have to make it as a stay at home D-man, but guess what those guys feature in this league.
Hicketts has great vision and good puck skills. However, he is flat out small and he isn't a great skater. I cannot think of the last guy we said oh don't worry he is small but he also isn't very fast either, great combo...
Keep in mind Joe Hicketts is a left handed shooting smaller player too, so it isn't like he brings the much craved right handed shot that could help him out.
I guess anything is possible we don't have a lot in terms of left-handed offensive D-man with Smith not panning out and DeKeyser lacking game breaking ability there. But still it is hard to see how he comes in at his height with his reach. It also supposes they don't draft someone that has that ability and immediately knocks him down a peg organizationally.
De Haas isn't great by any means, but he has a NHL frame, NHL skating and has flashed some of the other abilities. I think he has a better shot at reaching the league than a 5'6" guy that doesn't skate elite to make up for it.
As I said though I will be rooting for Hicketts to make it. Ton of heart and some tools. For instance if you give Hicketts De Haas' frame and skating he would have gone in the top 10 in the draft, but unfortunately that isn't how it works. There are limits to where you can overcome that, I have a feeling the NHL is going to be an extremely tough one for Hicketts. But who knows maybe he is the next Francis Bouillon.
