With the 206th pick Tampa selects goalie Samuel Harvey from the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies of the Q.

@GrandLarseny and the Sharks are up next. Will also PM.

image.jpg

The 20 year old led the Q in GAA and SV% this year and was named 1st team all star, impressive even as an overager. His ability to transition quickly to pro hockey can help shore up a farm system shallow on goalies after Connor Ingram.

Best possible outcome: Jusse Saros

Can’t believe he’s still available in round 7. He’s a massive sleeper in this draft both potential and size-wise. Between him and Jack Drury you won’t find a player who works so hard on the ice shift in and shift out. Great pick SpoolCat.

Indeed. Another guy I was hoping would still be there come my pick.

With our final pick, San Jose is proud to select from IK Oskarshamn in Allsvenskan, D Marcus Bjork!

Round 1, pick #21 - C Akil Thomas
Round 4, pick #114 - RW Pavel Gogolev
Round 5, pick #145 - C Riley Damiani
Round 6, pick #176 - RW Nikita Rtishchev
Round 6, pick #182 - D Jack St. Ivany
Round 7, pick #207 - D Marcus Bjork

Overall, I'm quite happy with how my draft turned out. Despite not having a 2nd or a 3rd, I think the upside is decently high for my players given where they are drafted. I still wish I had more picks though haha. Thanks for having me HFOil, and shout out to @Soli for running this again!

The Pittsburgh Penguins (@PKSpecialist) are on the clock.

1 - 24 - C – Jack Drury - Waterloo Black Hawks - USHL
3 - 63 - RW - Bulat Shafigullin - Reaktor Nizhnekamsk - MHL
3 - 86 - RW - Nando Eggenberger - HC Davos - NLA
3 - 91 - D - Jacob Ragnarsson - Almtuna IS - Allsvenskan
5 - 148 - LW - Ryan Chyzowski - Medicine Hat Tigers - WHL
5 - 152 - C - Colin Schmidt - Wayzata High - USHS
6 - 179 - D - Cole Krygier - Lincoln Stars - USHL
7 - 210 - G - Jett Alexander - North York Rangers – OJHL

With 8 selections in the draft the Minnesota Wild had a great opportunity to add some depth to the farm, but with only one selection in the first two rounds the chances of adding impact players was difficult. They believe they found one with the first round selection of Jack Drury. The Harvard commit comes from NHL bloodlines and has great draft pedigree. He’s one of the hardest workers in the draft, and is a smart and solid two-way center. He doesn’t have other-worldly talent, but he manages to produce at a high rate with his smarts and work ethic. To put it simply, this guy wills himself to score.
Shafigullin is the most talented of the draft choices that the Wild made. He is a first round offensive talent who can skate, and maybe more importantly, he can skate with the puck on his stick. The question for this prospect is consistency of effort. That doesn’t necessarily mean that he isn’t trying, but if he isn’t scoring, he isn’t doing much for his team.
Eggenberger is a big power forward who can flash some skill, but his production has left scouts wanting more. Perhaps he is simply a bottom 6 type forward without the offensive ability. That said, if he makes it as a third liner with size and a little skill, consider this pick a win.
Ragnarsson was the second Wild draftee with NHL bloodlines. His father Marcus was a solid NHL defender for several seasons. Ragnarsson’s game shows a lot of maturity. He is an extremely cerebral player on the back end who is a smooth skater and strong puck mover with good offensive upside.
Ryan Chyzowski has some NHL bloodlines as well, although his father Dave didn’t have the NHL career that many had hoped for. Ryan will likely be a winger at the NHL level, but he took a lot of the important draws for the Tigers this season. His shot is very good, and scouts rave about his work ethic.
Colin Schmidt is a hulking power forward who makes his mark below the hashmarks, setting up in the post or crushing his opponents along the wall. His skating will need to improve, but his physical nature and willingness to go to the dirty areas make him an intriguing prospect.
Another draft pick with NHL bloodlines, Cole Krygier is a defenseman high on potential. Like K’Andre Miller, Krygier is making the transition from forward to defense. His game on the backend is still quite raw, but he is a dynamic skater who likes to join the rush. He plays a physical game and has all the tools that NHL teams want in a defender.
Jett Alexander is a solid goaltending prospect from the Ontario Junior Hockey League. He is, in this scout’s opinion, the best puckhandling goaltender in the draft. He also has the size at 6’4, and is aggressive in the crease.

:pens
2 - 53 - C - Philipp Kurashev - Quebec Remparts - QMJHL
3 - 64 - RW - Niklas Nordgren - HIFK - Liiga
5 - 129 - G - Jacob Ingham - Mississauga Steelheads - OHL
5 - 146 - D - Toni Utunen - Tappara - Liiga
6 - 177 - D - Alexander S. Romanov - Krasnaya Armiya Moskva - MHL
7 - 208 - C - Nathan Smith - Cedar Rapids Rough Riders - USHL

With only six draft choices and none in the top 50, the Pittsburgh Penguins were looking for value in every pick and hoping for prospects high on potential. Philipp Kurashev turned heads with a very strong performance at the World Junior Championship for the Swiss. He is a creative forward who shows the ability to be a playmaker. He is one of those guys who just always seems to be around the puck and has that innate ability to make things happen every time he is on the ice.
What Nordgren lacks in size he makes up for in potential. He scored at over a goal per game pace at the Under 18 Championship. His finishing ability is definitely his best attribute and he has fantastic shot.
Ingham, like most of the goaltenders in this class, struggled mightily this season. His numbers were pedestrian at best, but despite that, there is a lot to like in this prospect. His big frame fills the net when he’s in his butterfly, and his reflexes, quickness and competitive nature make him a good bet to have a bounce back season next year.
Toni Utunen captained the Finnish Under 18 squad to a Gold Medal. His skill with the puck is underrated, and he shows good poise and vision. He isn’t the biggest guy, and his skating isn’t elite, but he just seems like one of those prospects you’d be foolish to doubt.
Alexander Romanov was an offensive behemoth for the Russians in international competition. He tallied 4 goals in 4 games at the World Jr. A Championship and followed that up with 3 points in 5 games at the Under 18 Championship. He isn’t the biggest defender, but his play with the puck has his arrow pointed in the right direction.
Nathan Smith is the definition of a late bloomer… at least as far as his exposure to the scouting world goes. The right shot centerman was skipped over in last year’s draft playing high school hockey in the Florida... how could the NHL scouts possibly miss him. Well, he wasn’t about to let it happen again. He walked in to the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders camp a free agent and ended the season as their leading scorer with a commitment to the Minnesota State University(Mankato). Smith has a high compete level and is a strong skater with good hands.

The Minnesota Wild and the Pittsburgh Penguins would like to thank Soli and their fellow draft freaks for a good solid month of entertainment during this mock draft. Despite a few bumps in the road, this draft, the HFOil Draft, once again proved better than any other mock draft on HF Boards. Well done boys. Now let's get on with Making the Oilers Great Again!

The Predators select from the Ottawa 67s right wing Oliver True.

3 (89) - RW Kody Clark - CAN - 6'1" 180 lbs. - Ottawa - OHL
4 (111) - D Declan Chisholm - CAN - 6'1" 185 lbs. - Peterborough - OHL
5 (131) - D Nico Gross - SUI - 6'1" 183 lbs. - Oshawa - OHL
5 (151) - C Carl Berglund - SWE - 6'2" 187 lbs. - Farjestad BK U20 - SuperElit
7 (213) - RW Oliver True - DEN - 6'4" 193 lbs. - Ottawa - OHL

Well had I been at the helm for the first three Nashville picks I would have picked different players. Pretty happy with the potential of the two picks I did make. I'm hopeful Oliver True can have a bigger breakout than his older brother did in his draft +1 season.

@Reginald McDunlop the Caps are up.

With their final pick in the draft, Washington selects Jasper Weatherby, from Wenatchee of the BCHL.

@McVirginOil and the Hurricanes are up next! Will also PM.

11-18-17-Weatherby-816x459.jpeg

The hulking 20 year old North Dakota commit dominated the BCHL this year, ending the season as the leading scorer and MVP. Story similar to recent 4th round signee of the Wings, David Pope, but with better numbers. This is a late bloomer that may very well prove to be a steal if his game continues to develop against players his age in the NCAA.

Best possible outcome: Alex Chiasson

There’s three picks left, so not to eager to enforce the clock.

I’m travelling right now, but if @McVirginOil takes way too long, nominate someone.

One of the main reasons I started doing this mock draft was to learn more about prospects in the middle rounds and deeper in the draft.

One of the reasons I keep doing it is cause I pick up interesting tidbits about you guys along the way. Hey @PKSpecialist, happy anniversary tomorrow! ;)

Thank you everyone for participating. We got a solid group of draft geeks and I look forward to going 7 rounds deep with you guys every year.

With the second last pick, Tampa is stoked to select Jerry Turkulainen, from JYP of the Finnish SM-Liiga!

t_turkulainenjerry2017.jpg

Thank to our host @Soli, and once more with feeling, @McVirginOil is up with the Jets!

After picking him last year and seeing him not get drafted, but performing well as a Leafs rookie camp invite, I'm more than happy to pick the dynamic, tiny forward at this spot. One of the top scoring rookies in the SM-Liiga last year, he performed even better this season.

Best possible outcome: Johnny Gaudreau

Damn, really good draft for you. Maybe the best one in here, although obviously you had 4 picks in the top45 so that probably helped. Still, great value on those mid-late rounds picks too. Also, I'm still pissed you stole Hållander and Wise right before my 2nd round pick :(

:avs

My draft ended up like this:

(1) #16 - Martin Kaut, RW, HC Dynamo Pardubice (Czech)

Thrilled to get Kaut at #16 as he was the clear BPA for me there. Probably my favorite pick in this mock draft. The 1st round pick is the most important one to get right, and if Kaut becomes as good as I think he can be, then it doesn't really matter that much how the rest of my draft went.

(2) #47 - Jack McBain, C, Toronto Jr. Canadiens (OJHL)

Lost out on Hållander and Wise so had to settle for McBain who I thought was the BPA here. I'm not a huge fan of McBain but I'm still quite pleased with this pick. A big centre with plenty of time to develop in college. Should be a relatively safe bet to be an NHLer. Maybe a good one at that.

(2) #58 - Slava Demin, LD, Wenatchee Wild (BCHL)

After taking two forwards with my first two picks I thought it was time to add a defenseman. Slava Demin seemed to be the BPA here of the d-men left on the board. I was otherwise contemplating Filip Johansson but he got picked four picks earlier. If I would've gone with a forward Morozov and Gustafsson was big time considerations. Anyway, I like what I've read and the little I've seen of Demin. Very mobile and steady defender with good size. Offensive upside seem to be the questionmark among scouts but he improved his production from 27 points to 45 from year-to-year in the BCHL which is very encouraging. He's another guy headed to college and who will have ample time to develop and round out his game. I'm sort of hoping he could turn into something like Jaccob Slavin. He already has the "Slav" part down at least :D

(3) #78 - Nathan Dunkley, C, London Knights (OHL)

This is probably the pick I'm the most unsure of. I really don't know a lot about Dunkley and I was pretty stressed making this pick. I just remember reading some good stuff about him and thought that he could be a solid pick here. In hindsight and after doing some more research it seems like it was a reach and that he's more likely to be a 5th round pick due to his average size and poor skating abilities. Still, he had some pretty strong production in the OHL and if he can just improve his skating it seems that he could at least become a role player in the NHL. I was also heavily contemplating Giovanni Vallati for this pick but I'm still not sure which one of them is going to have the most success. Good hockey sense + bad skating vs good skating and bad hockey sense, which one wins out in the end? Maybe neither, Aidan Dudas and Gabriel Fortier could've been wiser picks here, we'll have to wait and see.

(4) #109 - Liam Kirk, LW, Sheffield Steelers (EIHL)

I like this pick. I think it's hard to find a player this late with as much upside as Kirk. He's the epitome of boom/bust guy. I really like his skating, hands and shot though, and if he can translate that against better opponents he could be a hell of a player. Will probably need some time though, but I'd love if it headed to Sweden this coming year and got some development in juniors and against men. Similar to what Dominik Bokk did this year coming from Germany. I think this kid could be a top6 forward in the NHL. That's tough to find in the 4th round.

(5) #140 - Einar Emanuelsson, RW, Luleå HF (SHL)

Similar pick to Kirk. Very high upside for a guy picked this late. I almost took him in the 4th round but counted on him falling to my 5th round pick, which he did so I was very happy about that. Triple overager but if you look at this development year-by-year he could and probably should've been picked in earlier drafts, but his size has worked against him in that regard. Emanuelsson could be the Viktor Arvidsson of this draft. He could probably be in the NHL in 2-3 years already. Really dynamic forward. Would love for the Oilers to take a chance on this kid.

(6) #171 - Carter Robertson, LD, Ottawa 67's (OHL)

Robertson is another guy I know very little about, but I know Brock Otten is quite high on him. Seems to have a lot of upside though but is just very raw at the moment. After taking so many forwards already I wanted to pick another D and Robertson seemed like the best option. Betting on high upside in the 6th round is never a bad idea.

(7) #202 - Johan Södergran, C/W, Linköping HC (SHL)

I could've gone a million different routes with this pick. I still have a lot of names on my list but all of them, including Södergran are real wildcards. Södergran is probably the safest one of them though. He's a guy I already liked a lot last season and have been impressing me with every live viewing. Just a really hard worker and above-average skater with good size who I think has enough offense to be a bottom-six guy in the NHL one day. Was a leading player for his Linköping team in juniors this year and was rewarded with 20 games in SHL. Anytime you get an everyday NHLer out of a 7th round pick you should be happy, so I'm feeling pretty good about this pick. Hopefully he can take another step next year and start producing a little bit in SHL.

Conclusion

As a whole I'm okay with my draft. It didn't go as well as I wanted to and I missed out on some players I really liked, but overall I think I did a decent job. I have a lot of boom/bust guys in the mid and late rounds though so already a year from now it might look terrible, but I think my first 3 selections are very solid guys with high floors who should be quite safe bets to be NHLers in some shape or form. So, if those guys turn out then this draft will be a huge success no matter how hard the rest of the guys end up busting :D

Anyway, thanks to @Soli and HFOil for another good mock draft!

34 days to finish the mock draft this year. Not too shabby.

That's 6.38 picks per day if you include the May long weekend when the clock was not enforced. Pretty...pretty...pretty good.

I wanted to create an award for the fastest average time per pick, but anything that happened in May lost its time stamp.
I believe the true winner of this mock draft is whoever gets to pick after that guy.

I'm quite happy overall with both of my drafts, going with as much skill as possible with most picks, and despite being forward heavy, I believe there was overall balance in both cases. I found myself leaning towards the overagers at the tail end of the draft, I think there is some real value here and hope the Oilers do the same. Thank you again @Soli, and a job well done to everyone as usual!

Thanks. For the first time in these mocks, I'm pretty confident all of these guys get picked unless Skarek has completely fallen off of everyone's radar.

I think you got some pretty good value in your draft. Robertson in the 6th is going to be a steal. Dunkley was a good one, too. I'm also a big fan of McBain. I think worst case scenario for him is he turns into a Shawn Matthias clone.
