(1) 9th overall - LD Olli Juolevi (London Knights, OHL)
(2) 39th overall - LW Jonathan Dahlén (Timrå, Allsvenskan)
(2) 45th overall - C/W Dmitri Sokolov (Sudbury Wolves, OHL)
(3) 69th overall - C Noah Gregor (Moose Jaw Warriors, WHL)
(4) 99th overall - C Pius Suter (ZSC Lions, NLA)
(5) 123rd overall - C Rem Pitlick (Muskegon Lumberjacks, USHL)
(6) 159th overall - G Jack LaFontaine (Janesville Jets, NAHL)

Olli Juolevi & Jonathan Dahlén
Fairly happy with my draft, although it didn't turn out anything like the way I had planned. The first two picks Juolevi and Dahlén were both slam dunks for me, great value for where they were picked and I believe in both of them to be quality NHLers down the road.

Dmitri Sokolov
The third pick is where things got messy. My plan was to take Kyrou but when he was taken just before my pick it really made me unsure of what to do. Technically Bitten and Dube were BPA here but I wasn't in love with the idea of taking another small forward, partly because of already having taken Dahlén but also because of how small Montreal are up front already, especially down the middle. So I started to think of other possible candidates for the pick and eventually it boiled down to Hart, Katchouk, Green and Sokolov. Green was quickly discarded as I thought he wasn't the best value here. Hart is a goalie and I don't like taking goalies that early unless they're really good, so he was removed. Katchouk I like a lot and contemplated heavily but his offensive upside is questionable and this was my 2nd 2nd round pick so I thought I could afford to gamble, hence the answer was Sokolov. He looked awful at times during the season but when it was all said and done he ended up scoring 30 goals and being the leader in both goals and points on a terrible Sudbury team. And that is while adjusting to a new country, new language, playing with a bum shoulder and being out of shape. It's scary to think of what he could do with some proper training and being fully healthy. This is a kid who was ranked as a potential top10 pick in the pre-season and even 2-3 years back. Lots and lots of potential and definitely worth a pick in the 2nd to me.

Noah Gregor
With my 3rd round pick I had targeted defenseman Lucas Carlsson since even before the draft began. Again "my guy" got stolen just before I was due to pick. Luckily this time around there was a good option available in Noah Gregor who was the clear BPA at this point and someone I expect to be a mid 2nd round pick in june.

Pius Suter
Similar story here, I had targeted Jesper Bratt with this pick since before the draft began but this time he was at least taken 8 picks before me so I wasn't ever really close to getting him. Unfortunately my secondary options James Greenway and Eetu Tuulola also got taken so I had to re-think this pick. Suter was someone I had had on my list for a long time but didn't think I'd have to pick until the 5th round. All things considered I think he was the best pick I could make here and I'm very happy with it.

Rem Pitlick
This is the only pick that I'm actually uncertain about, as I have never seen him play outside of some youtube videos. It's a swing for the fences type of pick, but I thought that with his numbers and the progression he's showed over the past year it would be worth taking a shot at. Pitlick went from 16 points in 47 games last year to 89 points (and of them 46 goals) in 56 games and broke a couple of records in doing so. That's an incredible improvement over the course of a year and his 89 points were better than Kyle Connor mustered last year. No idea how his game is going to translate to the NHL level but he's going the college route so he has plenty of time.

Jack LaFontaine
Didn't realize this kid was still available, if I did I would probably have taken him with my 5th round pick. Either way happy to get him, only heard good things about him and seems like a good goalie to bet on in the mid/late rounds of the draft. Committed to a good program in Michigan too.

All-in-all, a pretty heavy-forward draft from my side but I thought the BPA was almost always a forward and if that's how it plays out you should go that route. I got a terrific d prospect in Juolevi already and everyone outside of that top15 is a pretty big questionmark anyway.

Hey, guys. It may be explained in this very long thread but I'm wondering if some system will be used to determine winners in this draft, such as how your picks fare in the actual draft (such as how high your draft choices go). Someone help me out so I understand this?

I was considering putting something together like that - IE - + points for every position you got your guy ahead of where he was drafted, - points for every position you got your guy behind where he was drafted (as in you took a guy 60th and he goes 30th, + 30 points, if the guy you took 60th went 90th, -30 points) but frankly it sounded like more work that I was willing to undertake.

Should be what are these guys doing in 3-4 years. It'll be interesting to look back at these mock drafts then.

That's a fun exercise but it depends a bit on your draft strategy. You could have a bad score but still end up with an amazing draft 3-5 years down the road and vice versa. It would've been easy to just go strictly BPA on all picks but that's no fun. Part of the fun with mock drafts is taking risks / sticking your neck out for guys that you like and see how it plays out

I find that type of system difficult to prove anything. Its too subjective. You get weird picks like what Boston did last year or the CGY Jankowski pick that would be a huge win for a few guys while a couple quality guys slips down a round or so but ends up playing 1000 NHL games.

Also this draft is not deep. I wouldn't be surprised to see guys ranked in the 60s going in the 2nd round and players in the 100s going in the 3rd round

So just for fun then, with no winners determined?

This thing needs an assistant draft manager. No, I'm not volunteering. :)

As a couple of responses have indicated, it's difficult to grade these. Obviously right after the real Draft I bump the thread and we compare our drafts to the real thing and see where our players went and that is kinda fun. I know last year Columbus chose a later round player that Zaddy had selected as Columbus. And Dnicks got a bingo, he correctly drafted a player for Calgary exactly where the Flames picked him. Unreal. After that, I bump the thread in 10 months and see how our Draft +1 looks.

Obviously if someone wants to dig deeper and really analyze this thing, be my guest.

Ha, I think we set a record here at HF Oil for fastest draft ever. Next to no managing required. Great group of knowledgable posters.

People could calculate their own absolute variance fairly easily and it should yield a "winner" in terms of closest projection.

But then you'd probably get a winner for the guy who drafted "correctly" in the later rounds.

Maybe some sort of Oilers themed award system. Here's a few examples

The "Jason Bonsignore" award - Highest negative differential

The "Steve Smith" award - Highest positive differential

The "Greg Chase" award - Highest player taken at the NHL draft from the 7th round of the HFOil draft

The "Brandon Davidson" award - Best defenseman taken late in the HFOil draft (4th to 7th round)

The "Fernando Pisani" award - Best forward taken late in the HFOil draft (4th to 7th round)

Maybe something for goalies as well or other suggestions. Should be fairly easy to highlight 5-10 guys from the whole draft.

It will be fun to look back at this in a few years, agreed. I'm sure everyone got a sleeper that they're dying to find out if they pan out (Marmenlind and Hebig for me)

the the "Grandpapa Nurse" award - best player who's random circumstantial happenings Craig MacTavish deemed worthy of note because of some deluded notion of self-importance.

We could also use a point system based on where players are actually drafted. For each spot before a player is actually picked is a point and the opposite. That's not how everyone drafted, but it'd be a interested way to interpret things. I'd be willing to do the work on this.I'm bored. Haha

Hey now, what if you didn't have a 7th round pick?

I was gonna pick him late but wasn't certain about his status. I guess Pronman was right to have him in his top 100.

Anatoli Golyshev, LW, 5'8, 180lbs

44p in 58g in the KHL at 21 years old.

This guy's gonna go pretty high.

Can we now invite as many as possible the good undrafted players for a tryout? If they work out can we also sign them?

Bit interesting that my early picks were selected late and my late picks were selected early, haha. The real thing is incredibly unpredictable. Not surprised Sokolov fell hard though, I had counted on that, I'm just higher on him than most. Even so, I think falling to the 7th round was a bit much, would've expected him to get selected in the 5th at the very least.

Suter went undrafted which isn't a huge surprise either, he signed a new 2 year deal in Switzerland so I guess teams might rather just sign him as a free agent later on than using a draft pick on him. Think it's a mistake though, there's a player there IMO. I would rather take my chances with Suter than like half of the players selected in the late rounds in the real draft anyway, but maybe that's just me.
