The Columbus Blue Jackets are in talks with the agent for star defenceman Torey Krug about a contract extension. Krug has at various times this season been not only the Jackets’ leading scorer - he currently trails Brandon Dubinsky for top spot - he has also spent much of the season as the top-scoring blueliner in the HFNHL.

While the Jackets are confident that the 26-year-old will agree to a reasonable two-year extension, rumours suggest they are checking the trade market before putting pen to paper, in case another team is interested in securing Krug’s puck-moving services.

Dubinsky, the Jackets’ do-it-all Captain, has also been rumoured to be available, but the turn-around of the Jackets’ fortunes over the past several weeks may have them looking more to the playoffs than to continuing their rebuild. Time will tell.

Sam Gagner is now also available - with a reasonable $4m cap hit and an expiring contract, Gagner’s 80 PA and 72 SC would make a welcome rental addition to any contending team’s second PP unit.

Available for a 3rd round pick.

The jackets’ Captain has been trade, to western a conference juggernaut Colorado. Coming back are a pair of draft picks and sophomore defenceman Michal Krempny.

A solid offer is on the table for D Torey Krug as well, and sources suggest he will be moved. Teams looking to get into the conversation need to come with at least a 1st ++ to start.

Three teams, meanwhile, are in the running for Sam Gagner. The first team to offer a 3rd round pick will land the rental playmaking pivot.

Change is in the wind in Columbus...
