To say this draft went the way i had hoped, would be an understatement of the century. However overall, i still walk away happy with the draft overall.
1st round- 28th overall
Oskar Olausson- LW HV71 Swedish hockey league.
For the good, Olausson has an NHL frame, is a great skater, and has some great hands. He dominated his age group, then was solid in the SHL. Now the bad, many want to see his compete level abit better. He seems to take some shifts off, which has some scouts questioning his upside. However the talent is there and at 28, hes a boom or bust player.
2nd round 60th overall
Dmitri Kuzmin - D Belarus Hockey league
Kuzmin if he was taller probably gets more attention. Slick skating, offensive dynamo. If the OHL plays this year he will join the Flint Firebirds, as he intended too last year. His play at the under 18 WJC, put him on my radar. Obviously the defensive game needs work, much like most young offensive defenders. However, a poor mans Quinn Hughes would be a great addition if he passes.
3rd round 69th overall
Aleksi Kolosov- G KHL Dynamo Mynsk
19 years old, ironically another Belarussian player. Seems we went into the well again. Well his size is not ideal, he has all the tools of a starting goalie in the future. Playing in the KHL as a 19 year old, is no small feat, he also played for the Belarus national team at the World championship as the starter. His work ethic is unmatched lets hope my fathers goalie instincts are in effect here.
3rd round 79th overall
Nolan Allan- D WHL Prince Albert
In a draft year i swing for the fences on high upside boom or bust players. Allan, is probably a safer bet to be an NHLer. He's a fluid skating defensive defender, the biggest issue is his offensive upside appears to be limited. Many scouts do wonder if the defense first system, holds him back. But i doubt hes ever going to wow us offensively period. Question is will he be a top 4 dman who can compliment our offensive minded defenders like Drysdale, Cormier, Kuzimin, Joesph already in the system. Or id he just taps out as a bottom pairing pk specialist.
