Hey guys lots of interesting names this off-season. I think that potentially there will be some good names available with teams losing money and lots of quality young RFA's, this off-season could see some big names available. Here is a list of every teams RFA and UFA players this off-season. There's a lot of work there, thanks. Of course, 90% of the worthwhile guys on this list will never hit the FA market... but you never know!

D.Moore UFA - will be re-signed
N.Kulemin RFA - will be re-signed
J.Langenbrunner UFA - may hit the FA market...
C.Thorburn RFA - may hit the FA market - pretty sure he'll be a UFA, not an RFA (see below)

M.Zidlicky UFA - will be re-signed
M.Giordano UFA - will be re-signed
A.Foote UFA - will hit the FA market, if he doesn't retireL.Smid RFA - will be resigned
D.Roloson UFA - may hit the FA market, if he doesn't retire
P.Budaj RFA - like Thorburn, will likely hit the market

** Is the HFNHL UFA age still 29 (players currently aged 28 in the sim)? The NHL age from Group III is now 27, is it not? If we're consistent with the NHL ruling, guys like Budaj and Thorburn would be pending UFAs, not pending RFAs...

Well, I will sign the 3 RFA Dmen most likely.... They'll be my 6, 7, and 8 Dmen next season (as they are this, but with improved ratings...) P.Szczechura is likely to hit the market over the next few weeks as he's not somebody I'm gonna re-sign with some other young players coming through who'll get some ratings for the 4th line.

Obviously Backstrom is a must sign. The question for me really is what to do about Milan Hejduk.... Just let him go to UFA and have Skinner step into the top line or keep him and have two killer lines... Problem of course is the cap.

For the Blues, the main pieces here will all be auto-signed for the most part. A few of the deals are tough to swallow, but not bad value all things considered. the fact Carter, Thornton, Chara and Pronger all just signed long-term extensions make the deals relatively easy to follow.

Ruutu won't be re-signed, but certainly RFA's like Bolland, Staal and Cogliano will be given fair offers. Chipchura and Lepisto will also be made QO's at the very least.

J.Thornton UFA
J.Carter RFA
D.Bolland RFA
K.Chipchura RFA
A.Cogliano RFA
J.Ruutu UFA
Z.Chara UFA
C.Pronger UFA
M.Staal RFA
S.Lepisto RFA

Devils plans as of now (why I am sharing this info, I don't know)

T.White UFA - obviously won't be re-signed
B.Little RFA - will be qualified at the least
T.Selanne UFA - will make an offer. will he retire?
S.Weber RFA - probably won't even qualify
S.Salo UFA - will probably let go
B.Clark UFA - may re-sign, depending on how the market looks. With Hamonic stepping up, I still need 2 dmen for next year.
J.Hillen RFA - will qualify
N.Khabibulin UFA - will hit the market
V.Stalberg RFA - will qualify
R.Ivanans UFA - will hit the market
PA.Parenteau RFA - will qualify
M.Smaby RFA - will qualify

I'll reiterate this question, since it seems to have slipped under the radar:

Anyone? Bueller? BUELLER?

Well, I don't see why it would have changed. It has been the same for several years for us, and it's not like the NHL just changed their UFA age this season, did they?

We have always lagged the NHL in this regard because of the fact our ratings are always a year behind real world production and we simply don't get to use our players for their initial year in the league. And when they bounce back and forth between the AHL and NHL for a few years, sometimes even longer.

I for one, would be open to a debate to lower it by one year (so those 27 on the vitals page), but I would expect we wouldn't consider that until the offseason given all GM's have been working under the consideration that only the 28's and above will be UFA's. And we have never really changed a big rule like that in mid-season.

Makes sense - I just honestly couldn't remember if we were still using 29 as te age. I'd be open to a discussion of moving it to 28 as well, but as you say, not a change to be made mid-season.

Good to know Budaj and Thorburn will be RFAs, though.

I don't think it makes any difference if the player is RFA or UFA. The most a team will pay is his NHL salary.

One more thing, it would be much easier if GM can separate their contract offers into two emails. One email with all auto signing and the rest in separate email. One more thing, a player will only qualify for auto contract if the cap and length of contract matches his NHL or in our case, 4 year max contract for players signed beyond 4 yrs in NHL. Please do not send QO offers now as QO should only be submitted after the season.

The player will only qualify for auto sign if he is making less in HFNHL . So in other words Hejduk will command much more as a UFA than what he is making in CGY. If 4th line centre with a salary of $7M can fetch a defenceman and 5th than anything is possible in this league.

I thought if a player made more in the HFNHL you could auto-resign at the HFNHL salary?

I think the logic way is to re-sign them at NHL salary cause we will have players doing 11M$ .....I will have to re-sign Jokinen to 9M$ LOL

General rules on auto-sign:

- A player will auto-sign on similar terms of to NHL at their relative cap hit. If it is a totally bogus deal with some phantom $1M year at the end, then some consideration may be given that the auto-sign should be a tad higher. Bit of a judgement call here for the agent, but these are the rare exceptions now (given the Kovalchuk deal was rejected), so generally agents will honour the long-term cap number on auto-sign deals. But as mentioned, the term has to be matched too (so if they have 1 year left at $3M, that's all you're getting them at that rate for too).

- However, if the player's HFNHL salary is higher than his NHL auto-sign, he will not auto-sign. Basically, players don't take pay cuts in order to give up their free agent status. That doesn't make sense at all. in some very unusual circumstances has this ever happened, and we're not going to put this power in the hands of the agents to figure out when the exception applies. That said, the player will generally accept the same money they are making with your team now to stay, if their auto-sign number is lower. Some GM's find this unfair to have to pay more, but the reality is the GM is responsible for either signing this deal in the first place, or trading for the player knowing the salary. We each make the bed in which we sleep.

For example, I have Pronger as a pending UFA and his current cap hit on his new deal is $4.9M. However, I am paying Pronger $6M per year. Despite the fact that Pronger has 10+ years of loyalty with my Blues franchise (the longest in the HFNHL), there is no way he is going to sign with my team for $4.9M. In fact, I don't think it's a big risk for me to say he'll insist on $6M to stay, in particular given the next few years he's making $7M in the NHL (front loaded contract).

One final note. The auto-sign will also only apply for players who played for the team that season. So if you trade for a player at season's end but before July 1st thinking you can auto-sign them, you are wrong. A player won't auto-sign and give up free agency to sign with a team they have never played before. This happened too much last year in particular, and really created a bit of a lame free agency period. Plus, it just isn't realistic.
