Our last top 20 was done roughly a year ago. This year we have only included players that are on our prospect list. Anybody that was signed to an entry level deal will not be included on our official top 20 list.

1: Barrett Hayton (1)
It has once again been an eventful year so far for Hayton. He made the Coyotes roster out of camp, but struggled to get into the lineup. There was speculation that me may even get sent back to junior. He was eventually loaned to team Canada for the World Juniors where he captained the team to a gold medal. The event had some ups and downs, Hayton was part of some controversy when he didn’t remove his helmet following a lose to the Russians during the anthem. He lead Canada in points and put on a gutsy performance in the gold medal game after suffering what many thought would be a tournament ending injury. Hayton was named to the tournament all star team.

2: Alexander Romanov (new)
Acquired in a draft day trade for my second round pick in this past draft. Romanov was a player we were very high on after last years world juniors where he won the top defensemen award at the tournament. He has played bottom pairing minutes this year in the KHL for CSKA the top team in the league. Heading into the World Juniors would be a chance for him to show case his all around game once again. He played top pairing minutes, power play and penalty kill. Although he didn’t win the top defensemen award for a second time, he still was named to the tournament all star team.

3: Adam Fox (new)
Another player acquired at the draft last year in a big trade, where I dealt the 5th overall pick (Boldy) for him and Kupari. I had some high expectations for Fox when we acquired him and so far he has not disappointed. He made the Rangers out of camp and has so far produced 27 points in 48 games while playing 18 minutes a night.

4: Ville Heinola (new)
It’s been an eventful year for Heinola who we selected 24th overall in the draft this past summer. We were shocked to find out that Heinola would break camp with the NHL Jets to start the year. He played in 8 games where he accumulated 5 points and received plenty of praise. A lot of people seemed very disappointed with the decision to send him to the AHL and eventually loan him back to Finland. Some feel the Jets would be better off with him in the lineup. Heinola also played at the World Juniors where he put up 5 points in 7 games. We hope for a strong finish to the season in the Liiga and possible we will see him in the NHL next year.

5: Owen Tippett (4)
He drops down one spot in the rankings, but it’s not because of his play. While we had hoped to see Owen crack the NHL this year with the Panthers he was cut and sent to the AHL. He has had a strong season with 35 points in 43 games as a rookie pro. Tippett has been named to the AHL all star game, and leads his team in points this year.

6: Rasmus Kupari (new)
Acquired with the previously mentioned Fox, Kupari has had a bit of a disappointing season. He came to North America this year and started out in the AHL where he struggled initially to adjust. Heading into the world juniors he was expected to be a leader on Finland and contend for a medal. Unfortunately for everybody Kupari suffered a torn ACL which would end his tournament and season. Now we have to wait until next season for the kid who was starting to turn the corner.

7: Egor Zamula (new)
Acquired in a trade just before the season with San Jose for Joe Hicketts and Daniel Sprong. Zamula was undrafted in the NHL and signed by the Flyers. After a big year in the WHL last year we had Zamula on our radar. For a player that was once an afterthought he has really developed nice and was playing at a point per game pace 28 its in 28 games before heading to the world juniors. He was a shining star for the Russians and would eventually lead the team in minutes playing even more then Romanov. After the tournament it was revealed that Zamula played with a back injury that has ended his season requiring surgery.

8: Shane Bowers (10)
He moves up a couple spots in our rankings. He got off to a sluggish start in the AHL this year adjusting to the pro game after two years in the NCAA. He has since hit his stride and is playing at a point per game pace over his past 19 games where he’s put up 17 points. With a strong finish to the season in the AHL maybe he’ll get a look in the NHL at the end of the year.

9: Matias Maccelli (new)
He’s really surprised us to this point in the season. We picked him in the 5th round this past summer after moving him down our draft list. So far he’s looking like somewhat of a steal averaging nearly a point per game in Liiga 27 points in 31 games with Ilves. He also had 5 points in 7 games for Finland at the world juniors and has since been ranked 28th on TSN’s NHL affiliated prospects list.

10: Vladislav Kolyachonok (new)
Another new name to the list selected in the 2nd round of this past summers draft. We might have had him ranked higher than anybody else at the draft, but I believe most still had him ranked fairly high. So far this year in the OHL he has produced 22 points in 32 games with Flint. It’s a long road ahead for him, but we believe he’ll be a player.
