The Coyotes would get their first Top 10 pick under the current regime and would use it to select the top scorer at the World Under 18 Championships Cody Hodgson. Hodgson displayed exceptional hockey sense and it translated on the score sheet at a high rate. He also showed unexpected leadership ability and was a captain at the age of 17. After moving to Buffalo in the NHL he had well over a point per game in his first three seasons and a point per game for Canada at the World Championships. Unfortunately this would be the peak of his NHL career and would retire at the age of 26. For the second season in a row the Coyotes would overrate a player take 62nd overall by the NHL's New York Islanders, however this one would never go on to post a single point in the AHL let alone play an NHL game. David Toews scored 100 points for Shattuck St. Mary's finishing behind only Derek Stepan in High School scoring in the country. This never panned out to the University of North Dakota and after a promising season in Brandon (WHL) Toews would go on to become a decent ECHL player prior to retiring at 23. Tyler Ennis taken early in the second round was the most successful pick in this draft for the Coyotes (which might be why they're over 10 years without a playoff appearance). Ennis continues to perform well in the NHL, although he has dropped from a secondary offensive option to a bottom six forward. James Livingston is a good example of a player who was lost in the transition of how the game has grown in 10 years. A big powerful forward who doesn't skate well and could acquire points by force in the OHL. He went on to become a decent AHL player and still plays, travelling Europe over the past 5 seasons. Patrick Maroon was a re-entry selection in the HFNHL after going in the 6th round of the 2007 NHL Draft. He had a very successful season with the London Knights and have the second most games played from this draft class closing in on 500 games played. Maroon is a Stanley Cup Winner in the NHL this past season with his hometown St. Louis Blues. The Coyotes would then take their first goaltender of the draft, Memorial Cup MVP Dustin Tokarski. Dustin would play several different seasons in the NHL but never really stuck in the league despite putting up pretty good numbers over his career. Tokarski appeared in 25% of games for Charlotte this past season leading to a 2019 Calder Cup Championship. Anthony Nigro was one of the best two-way centre's in the OHL. Coyotes went off the board a little to pick him up with their last third round pick. Anthony would go on to be a reliable OHLer and decent AHL player but has found most of his success playing pro in Italy. With no picks for a few rounds the Coyotes took a flyer on the OHL Goaltender of the Year Mike Murphy. Murphy was a star for the Belleville Bulls and went on to become a very successful AHL goaltender and also appeared in 2 NHL games for the Carolina Hurricanes. With one of the final picks of the 2008 HFNHL Draft the Coyotes picked winger Kurtis Bartliff. The reasons for this selection cannot be recalled, but it was clearly a mistake. Bartliff would go on to have a respectable NCAA career but would struggle to produce in the ECHL following this. He is still playing competitive hockey, and is producing over two points per game in Ontario Senior AA hockey, which is half a step above Sunday night beer league.
