3/8 played atleast 1 NHL Game - 4/8 played over 100 NHL Games

Over the course of the summer, we'll look back at previous drafts for the HFNHL's Phoenix/Arizona Coyotes under their current 12 year regime. First up is the 2007 HFNHL Draft.

We selected Mark Katic with our first pick. I was very surprised he didn't pan out, and I'm actually surprised he hasn't come back to North America to give it a shot. With so much of today's game about speed, Mark has elite level skating ability. Think Victor Mete, except a little bigger. His main issue was a pile of shoulder injuries. Had this not occur I really believe he would have had a lengthy NHL career. Jonathon Blum was also a strong skating offensive defenseman. One who represented USA at the WJC as their Captain. He has good leadership qualities and played for a little while in the NHL but just couldn't stick. Steve Mason I think still goes down as one of my best picks. I was surprised he was still there. He was a player I saw quite a bit and I had a lot of confidence in his upside. He's still a key player for the HFNHL Coyotes 11 years later and has almost 500 NHL Games played. Jay Barriball I never saw but I heard so many good things and his ability to produce in the NCAA I felt he had a good chance. I was wrong on that one. Matt Halischuk was the definition of a heart and soul player for Kitchener. He had some skill to go along with that work ethic and produced well for a 17 year old. He would go on to win a Memorial Cup with Kitchener and score the golden goal for Canada in the WJC. He had a respectable NHL career and a player I thought could have stuck around longer in a bottom six role. Josh Godfrey had a devistating slap shot from the point. He scored 24 goals this season as a defenseman. He was also very phyiscal. He would go on to play for Canada's WJC team, but ultimately his skating prevented him from having an NHL career. John Murray was a solid goaltender for Kitchener but never really took his game to the next level after this season. Admittedly I was running out of players by the 7th Round and took a Hard working two-way centre I saw a lot in Jared Gomes. His potential to play NHL was low but I figured he might slot into a bottom six role and has had some pro success despite not really getting much NHL attention.
