Considering the club carried an 8.25M back-up this year and dealt away its long-time first line centre in August, making it to the second round of the playoffs was reasonably a success. However, the crunch is on to try to squeeze another last run out of Evgeni Malkin and co before a full rebuild begins.

Several veteran players, including Jeff Petry, Kyle Palmieri, Justin Faulk and Derek Ryan have already extended with the club, and new contracts should be completed with Mike Hoffman and Carey Price shortly. Mike Matheson is the only significant RFA at this stage and shouldn't be hard to sort out.

With that being said, with Thomas Chabot joining the blueline, there is again a crunch on the blueline and the club would like to flip a top four blueliner for a top six forward. To that end, the following players are on the block:

Jeff Petry
Dougie Hamilton
Justin Faulk

Otherwise, the following players are available for late round picks in the coming draft:

Matt Peca: pending RFA, useful role player who kills penalties.

Gabriel Bourque: pending UFA, established PKer, a cheap re-sign as he made only 650k

Ryan Spooner
: one year at 4M, obviously a reclamation project who could help you meet the floor and maybe regain value if the talent leads to a rebound.

Nikita Soshnikov
: injuries and waivers have held back a once promising career.

And finally, the following prospects are also available for a late round pick:

CJ Suess
Ben Thomas
Emile Poirier
Miles Gendron
Philippe Desrosiers
Tobias Lindberg
Ryan Zuhlsdorf
